Karl Bell

Karl I. Bell is a Detroit finance executive with more than 30 years of experience in banking, corporate finance, and economic-development investing. Before his investment career he served as Vice President and Senior Managing Director of the Municipals and Non-Profit Group at Fifth Third Bank, working with public-sector and nonprofit clients on financing.

For roughly 11 years, through the end of 2017, Bell was a Senior Vice President at Invest Detroit and its affiliated Detroit Investment Fund — the mission-driven lender and investor whose email domain (`detinvfund.com`) appears in his contact record. In that role he focused on economic revitalization and job creation, deploying capital into Detroit-area companies and real estate. Invest Detroit's venture arm (today branded ID Ventures) has invested in 230+ early-stage companies since 2009, deploying more than $40 million and helping leverage billions in follow-on capital across Michigan's startup ecosystem.

At the start of 2018 Bell left Invest Detroit to become Managing Director of GAA New Ventures, LLC, a newly created unit of Detroit-based GAA Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. The unit was formed in 2017 to diversify GAA beyond its manufacturing and logistics core and to drive economic development — new jobs, housing, and commercial real estate — in Michigan.

Bell is a graduate of Morehouse College and holds an MBA from the University of Wisconsin, and he has completed executive certificate programs at Harvard University and the University of Oxford's business school. He has been active in civic leadership, serving as board chair of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion and on the boards of Business Professionals of America (Michigan), the Detroit Youth Sports Commission, and Urban Partnership Bank.
