Background

Karl Sowa is a long-time consumer-marketing and technology-services operator whose career spans nearly three decades of internet and marketplace businesses. He got his start in 1996 as the 7th employee and head of marketing at GeoCities, which grew to become one of the most-visited sites on the internet during his tenure. From there he moved through a series of marketing and e-commerce leadership roles, including VP of E-Commerce at the Musicland Group, VP of Online Marketing & Consumer Technologies at Teleflora, and Chief Marketing Officer at NetQuote.

He is best known in the home-services space for his time at HomeAdvisor, where as Chief Marketing Officer he launched a national direct-response TV campaign and built direct-mail marketing products for the company's contractor-matching marketplace. That background in performance marketing and two-sided marketplaces carried directly into his role at TaskEasy, the Salt Lake City–based lawn-care and property-maintenance marketplace, where he rose from Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Operating Officer to President. At TaskEasy he helped scale the company from roughly 40 to more than 350 team members, coordinating thousands of contractors serving properties in over 12,000 U.S. cities. His TaskEasy email address (the domain in the stub data) reflects this executive tenure.

In June 2023, Sowa was appointed Chief Executive Officer of iRestify, a venture-backed cleaning and maintenance platform for property managers, where he is focused on expanding the company to new markets across North America. On his appointment he said he was "inspired by iRestify's mission to help property managers deliver an extraordinary tenant experience."

He holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering (with academic honors) from Columbia University's School of Engineering & Applied Science and an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an individual angel, not through an institutional fund — his angel activity is an extension of his operating career rather than a full-time investing practice.
  • Stage: Seed / early-stage. His documented investment was made at the Seed round.
  • Sectors: Concentrated in areas he has operated in — PropTech, real estate & construction tech, home/property-services marketplaces, and adjacent enterprise/e-commerce software.
  • What makes him say yes: He backs businesses in the technology-enabled services and marketplace mold he has repeatedly scaled (HomeAdvisor, TaskEasy, iRestify) — companies where growth is driven by two-sided marketplace dynamics, performance marketing, and operational scaling.
  • Value-add: His edge to founders is operational, not just capital — deep experience in marketplace scaling, consumer/performance marketing, and property-services go-to-market.

Notable Investments

  • TurboTenant — Fort Collins, CO rental-management / landlord software platform. Sowa invested in the June 4, 2018 Seed round; he participated alongside a September 2018 $2.2M raise led by Kirk Holland of Access Venture Partners, with fellow angel and HomeAdvisor co-founder Michael Beaudoin. TurboTenant went on to become a widely used free platform for independent landlords.
