Background
Katherine "Katie" Nixon is a long-tenured investment executive at Northern Trust and one of the most widely quoted market commentators in U.S. wealth management. She began her career in September 1986 at U.S. Trust Company, where she spent 18 years in a range of investment roles, ultimately serving as Managing Director and Division Manager in the Wealth Management Division in New York and sitting on U.S. Trust's Portfolio Policy Committee and Private Equity Investment Committee.
Nixon joined Northern Trust in 2004, helping to build out the firm's wealth presence in New York City, Boston, and Greenwich, Connecticut. In 2011–2012 she was promoted to Chief Investment Officer for Northern Trust's Wealth Management business, a role she held for more than a decade. As CIO she led the national investment management practice from the firm's Chicago headquarters, set investment policy with a focus on portfolio construction and goals-driven investing, and directed the activities of more than 200 portfolio managers across Northern Trust's 60-plus wealth offices. She served on the firm's Investment Policy Committee and Tactical Asset Allocation Committee and chaired the Wealth Management Investment Advisory Committee, overseeing well over $150 billion in assets during her tenure.
Effective December 2, 2025, Nixon transitioned out of the CIO seat to become President of Northern Trust's Wealth Management Northeast Region, responsible for the firm's investment management, banking, and fiduciary business across the Northeast. She was succeeded as Wealth Management CIO by Eric Freedman, formerly CIO of U.S. Bank. Northern Trust private-wealth president Jason Tyler cited Nixon's "rare combination of steadiness and strategic instinct" as the reason for the regional leadership move.
Nixon earned her B.A. from Wellesley College and an MBA in finance from New York University's Stern School of Business, where she was a Stern Scholar, graduated with distinction, and was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma. She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), and Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA) designations.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Not an angel/seed investor. Nixon does not make individual startup or seed-stage investments; her work is institutional, multi-asset portfolio management for wealthy families and institutions. Any check-size, seed-round, or target-company-profile framing from the source stub does not apply.
- Goals-driven investing. She is closely associated with Northern Trust's "goals-driven" wealth framework — building portfolios around clients' specific objectives and risk/liquidity needs rather than benchmark-relative return alone.
- Portfolio construction and asset allocation. Her stated focus is "empowering clients to achieve more with their wealth through portfolio construction and goals-driven investing," spanning public equities, fixed income, and alternatives.
- Macro- and risk-aware. Her public commentary emphasizes tactical asset allocation, financial-conditions monitoring, and macro risks — e.g., flagging tight financial conditions, corporate refinancing walls, and the lagged effects of Fed rate hikes as key risks to the outlook.
Notable Investments
- No public record of angel, seed, or venture investments. Nixon operates as an institutional CIO/portfolio leader, not a startup backer, so there is no portfolio of named startup deals attributable to her.
- Her "portfolio" is instead Northern Trust Wealth Management's multi-asset client assets — more than $150–160+ billion across the firm's wealth offices during her time as CIO — invested across public markets and alternatives rather than in individual private companies.
