Background

Kathy Chen (Chinese name Hua Chen) is Managing Partner and Chief Financial Officer of SB China Venture Capital (SBCVC), which she joined in 2010. She is the firm's senior financial and operational leader rather than a sector-focused deal partner, overseeing fund finance across SBCVC's USD and RMB vehicles. By 2026 she was described as bringing "over 30 years of extensive financial and operational experience."

Before SBCVC, Chen spent close to two decades in finance and accounting. She served as Director and Chief Financial Officer of Volaris Capital, a derivative products group within Credit Suisse, and earlier worked as a tax consulting manager at Arthur Andersen LLP and Ernst & Young LLP. She is a U.S. Certified Public Accountant.

Chen earned undergraduate degrees in accounting and finance from NYU Stern School of Business and a master's degree in taxation from Fordham University. She has held board and governance roles alongside her SBCVC work: she was an independent board member and Audit Committee Chair at Technovator International Ltd. (Hong Kong Exchange–listed) from September 2011 to May 2023, and has been a board member of the China Venture Capital Finance Organization (CVCFO) since September 2010. In May 2026 she was appointed an independent director and Chair of the Audit Committee of GDS Holdings (NASDAQ: GDS).

SBCVC itself was established in 2000 and is headquartered in Shanghai, with regional offices in Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Taiwan. It is one of China's longest-running venture and growth investors, with a portfolio of well over 150 companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through SBCVC, a Shanghai-based VC/PE firm founded in 2000 managing both USD and RMB funds.
  • Backs high-tech, high-growth companies across TMT, healthcare, clean technology, consumer/retail, and advanced manufacturing.
  • Stage-agnostic within its mandate — SBCVC deploys capital from pre-seed to pre-IPO, including Series A growth rounds.
  • Focused on the Greater China market, leveraging deep local coverage across its six regional offices.
  • Chen's specific value-add is fund finance, accounting, tax, and governance/audit oversight — she is the firm's CFO, so her lens is financial rigor and operational discipline rather than thematic deal-sourcing.

Notable Investments

  • Alibaba / Taobao.com — SBCVC was an early China-tech backer; among its best-known portfolio names.
  • Focus Media — advertising/media network that later listed publicly.
  • GDS Holdings — data-center operator (NASDAQ/HKEX-listed); Chen joined its board as an independent director in 2026.
  • Fillr — Australian form-fill/e-commerce startup; SBCVC co-led its A$5M Series A (2016) alongside Southern Cross and Reinventure.
  • Other named portfolio companies include Shenwu, Precise, Di'an, and Edan (advanced manufacturing and healthcare).
