Background
Kay Hong is a turnaround and consumer-retail operator turned angel investor. She earned a BS from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, and built her early career as a corporate restructuring specialist. She served as a Senior Director / Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal, the global turnaround and restructuring advisory firm, where she specialized in financial analysis, restructuring plan development, and performance-improvement initiatives for both distressed and financially healthy companies.
Her operating roles have concentrated in small-box specialty retail and consumer goods. She served as interim Chief Executive Officer and Chief Restructuring Officer of Harry & David, the roughly $400-million multichannel food-gifting company, and held roles connected to Talbots. She then became Chief Executive Officer of Torrid, the plus-size apparel retailer, before moving into the luxury sector.
In November 2018, Hong was named CEO of Proenza Schouler, the New York luxury fashion label, joining as founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez bought their company back from outside investors. She said she took the role based on her belief in the founders' "limitless" creative talent and the brand's untapped growth potential — an unusual move for someone whose reputation was as a turnaround expert rather than a luxury insider. She led the company until October 2024, when Shira Suveyke Snyder was appointed to succeed her as CEO.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an individual angel, typically at seed / early-note stages, deploying personal capital for equity.
- Gravitates toward consumer and household-products companies where her operating and turnaround background adds value — she is an operator-investor, not a pure financial backer.
- Willing to take board seats and stay involved as a "longtime investor," suggesting she backs companies she can support over multiple rounds rather than making passive one-off bets.
- Track record is concentrated (a small number of disclosed investments), indicating a selective, conviction-driven approach centered on founders and categories she knows well.
Notable Investments
- Aunt Fannie's — natural/plant-based home cleaning and pest-control consumer products company. Hong began investing around 2017, participated in the company's ~$2.5M convertible-note round and its follow-on ~$5M financing round (closed February 14, 2019, alongside RCV Partners, CircleUp and Monica Nassif), and was appointed to the company's Board of Directors as a longtime investor.
- Aggregators list roughly three total investments for Hong, with Aunt Fannie's being her most prominent and repeatedly-backed position.
