Background
Kelvin Wu is a Hong Kong financier and the founder, executive chairman and chief investment officer of AID Partners Capital, a strategic investment firm and operating group he co-founded in 2007. He studied business administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (BA), pursued postgraduate study at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies, and has since completed HMX Pro continuing-education courses through Harvard Medical School — a reflection of his pivot toward health-tech. He credits CUHK with shaping his outlook through its emphasis on freedom of thought, broad general education, and his minor studies in Japanese and French.
Before founding AID Partners, Wu spent over a decade in investment banking, where he led teams that sponsored and underwrote more than 25 IPOs across Asian markets. He served as President of Investec Asia (the Asian arm of the UK's Investec Bank) and as a Managing Director of China Everbright Capital Ltd. In late 2007 he launched his first private-equity fund, AID Partners I, backing it with capital from prominent institutions including C.V. Starr & Co. — the firm run by former AIG chairman Maurice "Hank" Greenberg — and Investec Bank.
Today AID Group describes itself as a media, technology and finance conglomerate headquartered in Hong Kong with affiliated offices worldwide. Wu also serves as CEO of Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment and Legendary Pictures East, sits on the board of Shunwei Capital, and is a director of several Hong Kong- and Korea-listed companies. In 2018 he established AID Genomics, the parent of Israeli cancer-diagnostics company GeneSort; during the pandemic AID Genomics was contracted by the Israeli government to build a Jerusalem lab capable of running up to 70,000 COVID-19 PCR tests per day.
Wu is known for a hands-on, operator-investor style rather than passive capital. His best-known turnaround was acquiring HMV's Hong Kong and Singapore businesses in 2013, where deep restructuring (cutting back-office headcount from 40+ to roughly six) helped lift the company's value roughly tenfold within four to five years.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Mission-first framing: "I founded my companies with the mission to make the world a better place. Making money is just a by-product."
- Hands-on, control-oriented operating: takes strategic/controlling stakes and drives operational restructuring, targeting profitability within ~24 months post-acquisition.
- Three sector pillars — media & entertainment, technology, and healthcare — with healthcare/health-tech now consuming roughly 70% of his focus (cancer diagnostics via GeneSort, diabetes therapeutics via Intarcia).
- Cross-border bridge strategy: in entertainment, "building a better lifestyle by bridging media and entertainment in different global territories" — connecting Western IP/talent with Asian capital and markets.
- Selective early-stage bets: alongside the PE funds, he personally seed-funds frontier tech (e.g., autonomous vehicles, fintech), often co-investing with high-profile partners.
