Background
Ken Ehrhart is a technology investor and operator best known as a co-founder and General Partner of SunBridge Partners, a U.S.- and Japan-focused venture firm. SunBridge describes its approach as research-intensive and focused on helping technology companies build businesses across North America, Europe, and Japan. On the firm’s team page, Ehrhart is listed as co-lead of the Japan JV practice, a specialist in digital media and cloud computing, CEO of Paracosma, director at TalentA, and observer at Concur Japan and Marketo Japan.
Before SunBridge, Ehrhart co-founded Equitek Capital, where he was a Founding Managing Director. Equitek was an international, technology-focused venture group investing across semiconductors, communications, broadband wireless, optical networking, RFID, adaptive computing, pervasive computing, and related advanced technology categories. Public investor databases associate Equitek with early-stage funding, chiefly second and third rounds, with a smaller seed focus.
Earlier in his career, Ehrhart served from 1996 to March 2000 as Director of Research for the Gilder Technology Report, a Forbes-published monthly technology investment newsletter, where he evaluated trends and companies across semiconductors, computers, displays, software, consumer electronics, internet, e-commerce, fiber, satellite, wireless, telephony, and cable technologies. In 1993, he founded E-Consulting, a technology consulting and research firm focused on technology assessment, market research, strategic planning, business development, joint ventures, and M&A.
Ehrhart graduated with honors from two bachelor’s degree programs at UC Berkeley in 1987 and attended Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service from 1987 to 1989. He later founded Paracosma in 2016 as an AR/VR solutions company with offices in the U.S., Japan, and Nepal.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- SunBridge’s current focus is helping leading global enterprise software and SaaS companies enter and scale in Japan through joint ventures, local leadership recruitment, operating support, and market-entry execution.
- SunBridge says its approach is to “partner” with entrepreneurs rather than simply “sending a check and showing up once a quarter,” emphasizing active support and shared vision.
- Ehrhart has said that, as a VC, he can tell whether a founder is passionate about their own pitch; he warns that “just chasing money or a perceived opportunity” is visible to investors.
- Equitek’s historical criteria favored breakthrough or newly conceived technologies with commercial feasibility, defensibility through patents or proprietary elements, large markets, and potential to become public within roughly three years.
- Stage focus spans seed to later-stage venture, but the best-supported Equitek description says its core activity was early-stage funding, mainly second and third rounds, with only a small seed focus.
- SunBridge’s Japan JV practice favors U.S. enterprise SaaS companies where localization, sales leadership, credibility, and governance are critical to Japanese market entry.
