Background
Kenichi Kozuka served as President and Representative Director of Japan Post Capital Co., Ltd., the corporate venture capital subsidiary of Japan Post Holdings. The firm was established on 1 November 2017 (initially under founding representative Tetsuya Senda) to invest the Japan Post Group's capital into high-growth startups and to connect one of Japan's largest physical and human networks — roughly 24,000 post offices nationwide — with the technologies of emerging companies. Kozuka was the firm's representative director through the period when it built out its portfolio, and public records show him signing partnership agreements on the firm's behalf as early as 2019.
Kozuka's background is rooted in the Japan Post Group itself. Prior to and alongside his CVC role, he held executive officer responsibilities at Japan Post in areas including financial operations and quality improvement (金融業務部・募集品質改善部担当), reflecting a career built inside Japan's postal and financial-services establishment rather than a traditional venture-capital track. That grounding shaped Japan Post Capital's "hands-on" investment style, which pairs capital with access to the Group's logistics (Japan Post), insurance/healthcare (Japan Post Insurance / Kampo), and banking (Japan Post Bank) operations.
Under his leadership the firm grew into an active CVC, investing in 80+ startups over roughly seven years. He was succeeded as Representative Director and President by Takaaki Adachi (足立崇彰), effective 1 April 2025 (announced 29 March 2025), a former Panasonic and Silicon Valley CVC executive who now leads the firm.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Strategic CVC, not a pure financial investor: Japan Post Capital invests to "connect one of Japan's largest physical and human networks with the innovative technologies and aspirations of startups," seeking co-created value and medium-to-long-term Group revenue rather than financial return alone.
- Hands-on ("ハンズオン型") support: beyond capital, the firm offers portfolio companies access to Japan Post Group assets — nationwide logistics, ~24,000 post offices, banking and insurance customer bases.
- Sector priorities aligned to Group synergies: logistics/mobility, FinTech, HealthTech, robotics, and regional revitalization.
- Stage: open from seed to pre-IPO, but historically weighted toward mid- and later-stage growth rounds (frequently leading or anchoring larger raises).
- Check size: flexible; the firm has been described as writing tickets ranging from roughly ~$100K up to ~$30M, and it has led multi-billion-yen rounds.
- What earns a "yes": demonstrable synergy with the Japan Post Group's networks and businesses — a startup whose growth the postal, banking, insurance, or logistics arms can accelerate (and benefit from).
