Background

Keval Desai is the Founder & Managing Director of SHAKTI, an early-stage technology venture firm based in San Francisco. He has spent roughly three decades in Silicon Valley (working there since 1991) across the full arc of operator, entrepreneur, product leader, and investor. Early in his career he co-founded Achex, a venture-backed online payments company started in 1999, which was sold profitably to First Data during the Web 1.0 era.

Desai joined Google pre-IPO and spent about seven years (roughly 2003–2008) as a Director of Product Management, where he led monetization products and played a foundational role in scaling the company's advertising business, including AdWords and AdSense, as well as work on Google Access and Google TV. After Google he became an active angel investor before joining InterWest Partners' information-technology team in 2011, where he served as a General Partner for roughly a decade. His personal investing focus at InterWest was approximately 80% consumer internet and 20% SaaS. He later left InterWest to launch SHAKTI.

Across his career Desai has invested in 60+ (by some counts 100+) startups, several of which became category leaders or reached IPO. He is also active in education and the startup community: he founded an early student startup accelerator at UC Berkeley in 1998 (now known as "Launch"), taught a graduate-level venture capital / private equity MBA course at UC Berkeley (earning a top "6.0" teaching distinction), and has served on advisory boards for UC Berkeley's engineering and business schools.

On education, Desai holds an M.S. in Computer Science, a B.E. in Electrical Engineering, and an MBA.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Specializes in the earliest stage — backing companies that are "pre-revenue, pre-product, sometimes even pre-incorporation."
  • Core thesis (in SHAKTI's own words): "Early stage specialists, backing founders reimagining toothbrushes* with AI" — where a "toothbrush" stands for "a large, frequent use case." In other words: very large, high-frequency consumer/business behaviors, rebuilt around AI.
  • Category leadership: From his stated criteria, he looks for "category leading companies," asking whether a product "can it be used by 100 million users and see $100 million in annualized revenue?"
  • Founder quality: Seeks entrepreneurs who "literally stand apart from the rest," often showing leadership traits early (high school/college), with the ability to "take care of all functions" — engineering, sales, marketing, and hiring.
  • "Why now?": He weighs timing and catalysts heavily — "Why would this company succeed now? What is the catalyst to propel them forward?"
  • Founder-centric approach: SHAKTI positions itself as a transparent advisor and partner rather than a controlling investor.
  • Diversity: Notably, at InterWest he highlighted that four of his seven board seats were companies with women CEOs.
