Background

Khai Ha is a Partner of GPI Capital and a member of its Investment Committee. GPI Capital is a New York–based independent asset manager (roughly $768 million in AUM per its March 2024 Form ADV) that pursues a "growth equity with downside protection" strategy — leading minority, non-control equity or equity-like structured investments of about $50–200 million in late-stage growth and mature companies across technology, consumer, and industrial markets. GPI's partners have operated together for two decades and deployed over $5 billion of capital.

Ha brings more than 16 years of investment-management and banking experience. Before GPI, he was a Managing Director at BTG Pactual's Global Partnership Investing (the predecessor fund to GPI's strategy), and earlier led non-control investments at the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan's relationship-investing group. He also held roles at the investment firms Moore Capital Management and Epic Capital. He began his career in mergers & acquisitions and investment banking at Merrill Lynch (Pierce, Fenner & Smith) and BMO.

Ha holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and is a CFA charterholder. He has served on the boards of several GPI portfolio companies, including LegalZoom (independent director, 2018–2022), Postmates, and Hopper.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage & structure: Leads minority, non-control growth and structured equity (or equity-like) investments — explicitly "growth equity with downside protection," rather than seed or early-stage angel checks.
  • Check size: Approximately US$50 million–US$200 million per transaction.
  • Sectors: Technology, consumer, and industrial businesses.
  • Geography: Primarily North America.
  • Value-add posture: GPI leads its deals, obtains board seats, and works with founders, families, boards, and management on strategic, operating, and financial plans to drive shareholder value — providing "customized capital solutions" for transformational growth, M&A, and liquidity initiatives.
  • In his own words (on the Pharmapacks deal): "Andrew and team have built a premier integrated ecommerce enablement platform with deep brand, merchandising, logistics and marketplace expertise."

Notable Investments

  • Hopper — Led a $175 million growth-equity investment in the travel-booking/price-prediction app (Series G, August 2021); Ha tied to the board relationship.
  • Postmates — Invested in the food-delivery company in Fall 2019; exited when Uber acquired Postmates for $2.65 billion in December 2020, roughly 15 months after GPI's investment.
  • LegalZoom — Online legal-services provider; Ha served as an independent director from 2018 to 2022. The company IPO'd in June 2021 at $28/share (~$5B+ valuation).
  • Pharmapacks — GPI Capital and JPMorgan Chase Bank provided up to $100 million in growth financing to the ecommerce enablement platform (announced January 2025); Ha commented publicly on the deal.
