Background
Kimber Lockhart is a technology executive turned angel investor best known for her decade as a senior engineering leader at One Medical (1Life Healthcare, Nasdaq: ONEM), the membership-based, technology-enabled primary care company. She joined One Medical in April 2014 as Vice President of Engineering and was promoted to Chief Technology Officer in March 2015, a role in which she oversaw engineering, product management, design, product support, IT, and security. She helped lead the company through its 2020 IPO, and remained through the period surrounding Amazon's $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical, which closed on February 22, 2023 (her onemedical.com contact address dates from this tenure and is likely no longer active).
Lockhart is a serial founder and engineer. As a Stanford undergraduate she co-founded Increo (originally "IdeaCV," an idea-feedback engine born from a class project) with Jeff Seibert around 2007, becoming CEO after graduation. Box acquired Increo in October 2009, and Lockhart went on to serve as Senior Director of Web Application Engineering at Box, where she led the team building new product features and major UI redesigns before departing for One Medical. She holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.
Beyond operating roles, Lockhart has served on and advised healthcare and technology boards — including as a board member at genetics-testing company Invitae and as an advisory board member at fertility-care company Kindbody. She is a prominent voice on engineering leadership and women in technology: she was named one of Business Insider's "25 Most Powerful Women Engineers in Tech," recognized as a Modern Healthcare 2019 Top 25 Emerging Leader, appeared in the *She++* documentary, and writes frequently on management and scaling engineering teams (Medium, conference talks such as SF ELC and Girl Geek X).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests personal capital as an angel, primarily at seed / early stage; public trackers show a small, selective portfolio (roughly a couple of disclosed deals).
- Sector lean toward what she knows: healthcare/health-tech (from her One Medical operating experience) and developer-first / financial software (SaaS), consistent with her engineering background.
- Backs founders she has direct history with — notably investing in Digits, the financial-software company co-founded by her own Increo co-founder Jeff Seibert.
- Her publicly stated philosophy is about people and teams rather than a formal investing memo. On leadership she says: *"Success becomes less about what you do as an individual and more about what your team can accomplish."* On hiring she favors practical, real-world evaluation — *"we would rather ask them to co-design a data model … than ask them to reverse a binary tree"* — and mission fit: *"We want to make sure that the people that join us have a reason they want to work at One Medical."*
Notable Investments
- Digits — AI/automation-driven accounting and financial-software startup (co-founded by Jeff Seibert, her former Increo co-founder); disclosed investment around June 2021.
- HandUp — platform enabling direct donations to homeless individuals and nonprofits.
- Invitae — medical genetics / genetic-testing company; Lockhart served as a board member (governance role rather than an angel check).
- Kindbody — fertility and family-building healthcare company; Lockhart served as an advisory board member.
