Background

Kip Kirkpatrick is a founding partner, Senior Partner, Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of The Vistria Group, a private investment firm founded in 2013 and focused on companies in essential industries where Vistria believes financial returns and social impact can reinforce each other. Vistria describes its model as operating “at the intersection of purpose and profit,” with focus areas including healthcare, knowledge & learning solutions, financial services, and housing.

Before Vistria, Kirkpatrick co-founded two private equity firms. In 2001, he was part of the team that created One Equity Partners, the former private investment arm of JPMorgan Chase. In 2004, he co-founded Water Street Healthcare Partners, a healthcare-focused middle-market private equity firm.

From 2011 to 2013, Kirkpatrick served as CEO of United Shore Financial Services, an independent mortgage lender. Vistria’s biography says USFS hired more than 800 employees during his tenure and was recognized among fast-growing and top-workplace companies in Michigan.

Kirkpatrick received a bachelor’s degree in history from Northwestern University and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Business. He is a Northwestern University trustee, serves on Kellogg’s Global Advisory Board, and was a three-year starter on Northwestern’s men’s basketball team.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Vistria’s flagship private equity strategy targets U.S. middle-market companies with $10 million to $100 million of EBITDA in healthcare, knowledge & learning solutions, and financial services.
  • The firm’s stated investment philosophy is to deliver “significant financial returns combined with positive social change for communities across America.”
  • Kirkpatrick described Vistria’s Fund V investment philosophy as “focusing on industries that help our society become healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
  • Vistria emphasizes sector depth, operating expertise, policy perspective, and impact orientation. Kirkpatrick has said the firm’s ability to evaluate opportunities through “operational, investment and policy perspectives” is a core reason management teams partner with Vistria.
  • Vistria’s impact underwriting model, the Vistria Optimal Impact model, evaluates how impact connects to enterprise value across capability/capacity, conduct, workforce, and products/services.
  • This is not a seed or angel investing profile based on verified sources; the public record supports a middle-market private equity and private investment focus.
