Background
Koichiro “Koh” Nakamura is a co-founder, Founder and General Partner, and Senior Managing Director at Sozo Ventures, a venture capital firm formed in 2012 to invest in technology-enabled ventures and support their global expansion. Forbes says Nakamura co-founded Sozo to help startups expand into the Japanese market, and Sozo’s own materials emphasize support across company-building stages from seed to pre-IPO.
Before Sozo, Nakamura spent more than 20 years building technology companies and was a member of the founding team of Yahoo Japan. At Mitsubishi Corporation, he built relationships with major Japanese conglomerates and created Japan’s first Application Service Provider business as well as Datastations, which was acquired by ValueCommerce.
He also launched Innovation Kitchen, an incubator for seed-stage ventures in Japan. While there, he invested in university technology and served on the board of Scigineer, a Japanese discovery-engine company that went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2014.
Nakamura graduated from Waseda University and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Forbes lists his education as a Juris Doctor from Waseda University and an MBA from Chicago Booth. He was a member of Kauffman Fellows Class 12, received the Jeff Timmons Memorial Award, and became a council member for the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2020.
