Background
Ganesh Krishnan, widely known as K. Ganesh, is a serial entrepreneur and investor best known as Co-Founder of GrowthStory, a family-office and venture-building platform he created with Meena Ganesh. GrowthStory describes itself as backing founding teams in Indian consumer businesses, deep tech, and AI-enabled SaaS, while also building ventures through GS Labs and its healthcare-focused initiatives.
Before GrowthStory, Ganesh held senior management roles at Wipro, Bharti British Telecom, and HCL. He then built and exited four companies: IT&T, acquired by iGate in 2003; CustomerAsset, acquired by ICICI Bank and later listed as Firstsource Solutions; Marketics, acquired by WNS in 2007 for $63 million; and TutorVista, acquired by Pearson in 2011 for $213 million.
GrowthStory has been associated with the creation or backing of BigBasket, Portea Medical, BlueStone, HomeLane, FreshMenu, HungerBox, Verloop, and other companies. GrowthStory’s site says its companies collectively employ more than 25,000 people and are valued at more than $4.5 billion.
Ganesh holds a postgraduate degree from IIM Calcutta and a Mechanical Engineering degree from Delhi University. He has served on the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta, helped set up the IIM Calcutta Innovation Park & Incubation Cell as Founder Director, and has received Distinguished Alumnus recognition from both IIM Calcutta and Delhi University.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- GrowthStory’s stated investor focus is to “back founding teams building for Indian consumers, deep tech and AI-enabled SaaS.”
- Ganesh has historically favored large, difficult, underserved markets where operating experience matters, including grocery, healthcare, education, food, jewelry, interiors, and enterprise technology.
- He looks for founders solving large pain points rather than incremental ideas; in a YourStory interview, his advice to entrepreneurs was to “Pick a big problem to solve.”
- He places heavy weight on founder quality, long-term commitment, and passion. In a 2020 YourStory piece, he said promoters look for whether a founder is ready to commit at least ten years to a venture.
- GrowthStory is not positioned as a passive fund. Ganesh has described the model as active venture building, with involvement in strategy, fundraising, technology, scaling, governance, hiring, customer acquisition, and finance.
- He is valuation- and business-model conscious: in a 2018 VCCircle interview, he said the market was returning to “sustainable business models and positive unit metrics.”
