Background
Kristian Lundkvist is a Norwegian serial entrepreneur and investor who founded Middelborg in 1999. The firm began as a business-to-business distribution business in the telecom sector and, on the back of that success, was reshaped into a privately held investment company. Today Middelborg is 100% owned by Lundkvist and invests across public and private equities, real estate and financial derivatives, with a portfolio spanning early-stage start-ups through to mature listed companies.
Lundkvist's professional experience centers on business development, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate restructuring. Rather than acting as a passive capital allocator, he typically takes an active ownership role — holding numerous board and chairman positions across Middelborg's portfolio companies. For example, he served as an independent director and partner at listed mobile-technology company Techstep ASA between roughly 2016 and 2019, and he has held governance roles connected to Nordic listed companies such as the crypto/digital-asset group K33 (formerly Arcane Crypto / Arcario), where he chairs the nomination committee representing Middelborg Invest AS.
Middelborg operates out of Oslo (with a second office in Tønsberg), and Lundkvist is based in Oslo, Norway. Over more than two decades he has built the firm from a single telecom operation into a diversified holding company with stakes across technology, industrials, aquaculture, biotech, welfare technology and real estate.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Middelborg as an evergreen, permanent-capital vehicle — not a time-limited fund — allowing long-term holding periods and patient value creation.
- Stated philosophy: pursues "investments where Middelborg can offer value added, be an active part in shaping strategy, and facilitate growth and value creation." (middelborg.no)
- Brings more than money: business-development expertise, financial guidance, network access, and follow-on capital "beyond internal resources."
- Sector-agnostic but with clear clusters: deep-tech/software, biometrics and hardware, aquaculture and seafood, carbon capture / climate industrials, biotech, and Nordic real estate and hospitality.
- Comfortable across the risk spectrum — from seed-stage private companies to large positions in publicly listed firms — and often takes board seats to influence strategy.
