Background
Kumar Suppiah is a founding partner of Protégé Ventures, described as Southeast Asia's first and Singapore's only student-run venture fund. The fund was established in 2017 by a group of working professionals who saw that, despite the large flow of capital into Singapore's startup ecosystem, there was no systematic programme to equip students with venture capital training. Kumar was part of that founding professional cohort that seeded the vehicle before it transitioned, in 2019, into a fully student-run fund led by four student partners (Tao Huang, Lionell Loh, Grace Fun, and Justin Quek).
Professionally, Kumar has worked in investments — his LinkedIn profile lists him as Vice President (Investments) — and he has a strong quantitative-finance and digital-assets background. He was associated with Quanto and "Project Jarvis," a pre-incorporation, stealth-mode digital-asset trading startup, and co-authored analytical pieces on crypto derivatives with Gerardo Lemus of Quanto.
His own writing on Medium (@kumar.v.suppiah) reflects this focus: articles such as "Why so Serious? Smile with Crypto Options!" (April 2019) and "Black Crypto-Swans" (March 2019) examine options-implied volatility and tail risk in cryptocurrency markets — indicating expertise in derivatives pricing, volatility modeling, and risk assessment in emerging asset classes.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs student founders and recent graduates — Protégé only invests in startups with at least one student or recently-graduated co-founder, a deliberately unconventional niche aimed at the earliest end of the market.
- Writes small, early checks of S$25,000–S$50,000, typically structured as convertible notes, at pre-seed / seed stage.
- Sector-agnostic in practice: the portfolio spans AI, health/mental-health tech, agri-tech, social/consumer apps, and F&B.
- Twin mission of the fund: fund scalable student-led businesses and train "the next generation of venture capitalists," so value-add includes research support, fundraising help, masterclasses, and VC shadowing — not just capital.
- Personal lens skews toward quantitative finance and digital assets, reflecting Kumar's crypto-derivatives and investments background.
Notable Investments
- Hypotenuse AI — AI content/copywriting platform; Y Combinator-backed.
- Intellect — mental-health and wellbeing app for the Asia-Pacific region.
- Rooit (later "MeetNow"/omi) — anonymous social/chat app out of Taiwan.
- Lumitics — food-waste tracking technology for commercial kitchens and hotels.
- Across the portfolio (~10 companies), two have been backed by Y Combinator and portfolio companies have collectively raised over US$35M in follow-on funding.
