Background

Kun Gu is a Partner at FreeS Fund (峰瑞资本), an early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2015 by Li Feng (李丰), a former IDG Capital partner. At FreeS Fund, Gu is responsible for the firm's post-investment operations and platform/value-add function — the team that supports portfolio companies after a deal closes rather than sourcing deals alone. The firm runs both RMB and USD fund vehicles and has built a portfolio of well over 100 companies across consumer, hard tech, and biomedical themes.

Gu's professional expertise is concentrated in China's education industry, where he spent most of his operating career. Before joining FreeS Fund, he served as a Vice President at Sunlands (NYSE: STG), one of China's large online and adult-education providers, where he was in charge of sales and the management of more than 120 schools across the country.

Earlier in his career, Gu held a series of senior education-sector roles: he was Founder and President of All Genius Education; he founded the "Elite Learning Project" within New Oriental Education & Technology Group (NYSE: EDU), one of China's largest private education companies; and he served as a Director at Wall Street English, the international English-language training chain. This deep operating background in scaling education businesses is the expertise he brings to FreeS Fund's portfolio-support work.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through FreeS Fund, which backs early-stage and early-growth startups in China, concentrated on two broad fields — retail/consumer and deep tech / hard tech — plus biomedical.
  • Active adjacent sectors include education, fintech, AI, biotech and new-drug development, new energy and new materials, and intelligent manufacturing (Industry 4.0).
  • The firm's stated approach (under founding partner Li Feng) emphasizes investing early in technology-driven and consumer-brand companies and supporting them intensively after investment.
  • Gu's specific value-add is post-investment operations and platform management — i.e., helping portfolio companies scale operationally — making his domain expertise (education, large-scale sales/branch operations) most relevant to consumer and education-adjacent founders.

Notable Investments

  • Three Squirrels (三只松鼠) — leading Chinese online snack/consumer brand; later IPO'd on the Shenzhen exchange. A flagship FreeS Fund consumer win.
  • 360 DigiTech / 360 Finance (360数科) — Chinese consumer fintech and digital-finance platform; listed in the U.S.
  • FreeS Fund's broader portfolio spans 100+ companies across consumer, deep tech, and biomedical sectors.
