Background
Kurt J. Hilzinger (born March 4, 1960) is a private equity investor and veteran healthcare executive. He began his career as a staff auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers (Price Waterhouse) in the early 1980s and later worked at Citicorp Investment Bank before moving into the pharmaceutical-distribution industry. He holds a B.B.A. from the University of Michigan (Ross School of Business) and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Hilzinger spent roughly 16 years at AmeriSource Health Corp. and its successor AmerisourceBergen Corporation (now Cencora), rising from Chief Financial Officer to Executive Vice President and ultimately President and Chief Operating Officer. He played a central role in the recapitalization and initial public offering of AmeriSource and later in its merger with Bergen Brunswig Corporation, the transaction that created AmerisourceBergen — one of the world's largest pharmaceutical-services companies. He also chaired the Healthcare Distribution Association (the industry's distribution trade group).
Hilzinger joined Court Square Capital Partners, a New York–based middle-market private equity firm, in 2007, focusing on healthcare investments. In 2025 he transitioned from Partner to an Executive Advisor role at the firm. Alongside his investing work, he has held prominent board seats: he has served as a director of Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) since 2003 and as its Chairman of the Board (chairman role reported since 2014). His current and recent board affiliations include Advanced Diabetes Supply and Knipper Health, plus the Visiting Committee of the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and the Board of Presidential Advisors of Thomas Jefferson University and Health System.
In April 2026, Vesey Street Capital Partners (VSCP), a healthcare-focused private equity firm, announced Hilzinger as Vice Chairman of its Strategic Advisory Board, adding to his advisory portfolio in the healthcare-investing world.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Court Square Capital Partners, a middle-market private equity firm that makes control/buyout investments in established companies, not early-stage seed deals.
- Personal specialty is healthcare — pharmaceutical distribution and services, payor services, provider services, and healthcare products/supply — reflecting his operating background at AmerisourceBergen.
- Court Square's broader strategy targets four sectors: healthcare, business services, general industrial, and technology & telecommunications, backing companies with strong management teams and clear paths to operational and platform growth.
- Value-add comes from operating experience and industry relationships: Hilzinger is positioned as a strategist/operator who has run large healthcare-distribution businesses and sits at the board level of major healthcare organizations.
