Kustaa Piha

Kustaa Piha is a Finnish physician-turned-entrepreneur and investor who built his reputation founding and scaling Med Group (founded 2007), one of Finland's fastest-growing healthcare-services companies. Under his leadership as CEO, Med Group expanded from emergency medical/ambulance services into physician, dental, oral healthcare, home care, and personal-assistance services, growing from zero to roughly €100M in turnover. He exited the business in 2018, when Adelis Equity Partners acquired Med Group together with its founders and management.

He is unusually credentialed for an angel investor, holding an M.D., an M.Sc. (Soc.Sc.), and an M.Sc. (Econ.) from the University of Helsinki, and he completed a Ph.D. in Public Health in 2014. He has also been affiliated with the University of Helsinki as a researcher, giving him a clinical, academic, and commercial perspective on the health companies he backs.

Since 2016, Piha has invested through Athensmed, his personal investment company and family office based in Helsinki, which describes itself as pursuing "long-term, dedicated investing in solutions that improve people's quality of life, reduce inequality and support societal sustainability." He typically takes an active, hands-on role in his portfolio, most often via board seats — he is Chairman of the Board at Klinik Healthcare Solutions and became Chairperson of the Board at Brinter Oy in 2021 — and has occasionally stepped into a medical-director role.

Beyond investing, Piha has taken on public-sector responsibility: in 2024 he was appointed by the Finnish Government as an expert member across Finland's administrative courts for matters under the Communicable Diseases Act (tartuntatautilaki).

• Invests through Athensmed at early / seed stage in two buckets: health-technology companies (science- and research-driven innovations) and health-service companies with a growth mindset and social impact.
• Ticket size €125k–€500k, sweet spot around €350k, with a maximum allocation of about €1M per company including follow-on rounds.
• Stated mission is "long-term, dedicated investing in solutions that improve people's quality of life, reduce inequality and support societal sustainability" — impact and societal sustainability are explicit selection criteria, not afterthoughts.
• Brings deep domain credibility as an M.D./Ph.D. and a founder who scaled a healthcare company to ~€100M and exited — he understands both the clinical validity and the commercialization path.
• Prefers active involvement, usually as a board member (often chairman) and occasionally as a medical director, rather than passive capital.
