Background

Kyle Cox is the Founding Partner (also described as Managing Partner) of ATP Fund, an Austin-based, early-stage deep-tech venture fund and startup studio he helped launch in 2014. He brings nearly two decades of experience across entrepreneurship, operating roles, and investment management, and specializes in early-stage healthcare and technology companies. He is also an Executive in Residence at the Austin Technology Incubator (ATI) at the University of Texas at Austin.

Before venture investing, Cox built a corporate and operating career in healthcare and digital health. He held sales, sales-leadership, and marketing roles at large healthcare and med-tech companies including St. Jude Medical (now part of Abbott) and WebMD. He was subsequently a founder or early team member at several enterprise SaaS and healthcare startups, with reported leadership positions at Firefly Mobile, GenerationOne, and QuickCompliance (which was sold to Discovery Channel Health), spanning healthcare diagnostics, data systems, and professional-development markets.

Cox holds an electrical engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a business degree from Emory University (Goizueta Business School). At ATP, he works alongside team members including Bart Bohn (ATP Foundation), Josh Alexander (Venture Partner and former Toopher CEO/co-founder), John Stockton, Brian Huskinson, PhD, and Safi Modi.

At ATP, Cox takes a hands-on, studio-style approach to investing. The firm runs a proprietary operating program called "Proto.n," designed to accelerate ventures through operator expertise, an industry-leader network, and mission-aligned co-investors, working with founders from research translation through scaling.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in deep-tech / deep-science startups with defensible core IP, often spun out of universities and research institutions.
  • Frames its mission as backing "early-stage innovation for mission-aligned renegades" — scientific visionaries "powering science to save the planet."
  • Organized around four themes: Exponential Research, Enhanced Health, Energy Transition, and Empowered Enterprise.
  • Stages: Pre-seed (Launch), Seed (Nurture), and Series A (Scale); positions itself as an "early-stage venture catalyst."
  • Typical check size roughly $250K–$1M.
  • Deliberately targets underserved US markets and regional ecosystems, with an explicit focus on economically disadvantaged areas and reducing gender-disparity in access to capital.
  • Value-add is delivered through the Proto.n operating model — hands-on operator support rather than passive capital.

Notable Investments

  • Toopher — Austin two-factor / location-based authentication startup (co-founded by ATP's Josh Alexander); raised ~$3M and was acquired by Salesforce.
  • QumulusAI (QumulusAI Inc.) — Cloud infrastructure company deploying GPU-powered solutions for AI workloads.
  • Marqov — Business/productivity software company (co-invested alongside Generationship).
  • Deteqt — Application-specific semiconductor company; among ATP II's more recent investments (reported April 2026).
