Background
Laela Sturdy is the Managing Partner of CapitalG, Alphabet's independent growth fund (a multibillion-dollar vehicle often cited at ~$4–7B in scale). She was promoted to the sole leadership role in March 2023, making her one of the very few women to lead an established multibillion-dollar venture firm. She has been with CapitalG since shortly after its 2013 inception, originally joining the team then led by David Lawee.
Before venture, Sturdy spent roughly 2007–2013 at Google, where she rose to managing director of emerging businesses. She held leadership roles across YouTube and Google Search, was named head of media and entertainment for Google's display and video advertising business in 2008, and from 2010 ran new local and commerce initiatives including Google Offers and AdWords Express. Prior to Google, she was a consultant at Bain & Company, advising clients across media, retail, CPG, and private equity. This operating background is central to how she pitches CapitalG's value: hands-on, hypergrowth operational support drawing on Google's internal expertise in areas like pricing, subscriptions, and go-to-market.
Sturdy earned an AB in biochemical sciences (cum laude) from Harvard, where she also captained the women's basketball team. She completed an MSc in Multimedia Systems at Trinity College Dublin as a George Mitchell Postgraduate Fellow, and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business (2004). She is a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow for New Americans (an immigrant to the U.S.) and has been recognized on lists such as Fast Company's Queer 50 as a prominent LGBTQ woman leader in VC.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Growth stage, large checks: CapitalG typically deploys from ~$75M up to several hundred million per company, backing businesses that already have meaningful revenue and traction.
- Thesis-driven, research-first: "We've invested a lot in really going deep on thesis areas that we think are going to build the next generation of transformative technology companies." Her team frequently shows up to first meetings with proprietary market research and a strong point of view.
- Sector conviction: deep, pre-formed theses in AI, automation, cybersecurity, fintech, data/infrastructure, and marketplaces.
- Operational partnership over passive capital: she stresses going "beyond feedback" to provide genuine hands-on help, leveraging Google/Alphabet resources for founders during hypergrowth.
- Willingness to bet early on rare products: her pre-revenue investment in Duolingo (unusual for a growth investor) reflects a willingness to back a "unique educational product that was also fun that had this organic growth loop that was incredible."
- On AI (2025): "The demand we're seeing from Fortune 500 companies signals a fundamental shift in how software gets built."
