Background

Larry Mueller is the founder and leader of Cuvée, a Denver-based ultra-luxury villa and hospitality company that grew out of a private real-estate equity fund he launched in the mid-2000s. Before becoming an investor and fund principal, Mueller spent decades as a technology executive. He began his career at IBM Corporation, where he held roles including Branch Manager and Group Director of Marketing and Channel Operations, and later served as an executive vice president at enterprise software company JD Edwards.

From 1996 to 1999 Mueller was President & CEO of Imageware Corporation, a 3D-modeling software company, where he built a leading market position and ultimately sold the business. In October 1999 he became President & CEO of Ariba, the pioneering B2B e-commerce and procurement software company, a role he held through 2001 during the height and unwinding of the dot-com era. This pattern of leading and taking small technology companies public and to exit defines his operating pedigree.

Around 2005–2006 Mueller had what he has described as a mid-career epiphany — while working with Goldman Sachs to diversify his portfolio, he concluded that financial success alone wasn't translating into life enjoyment. That insight led him to create Cuvée Ventures, an investment fund that buys and sells high-end residential properties while letting its investors use those homes until they are sold. A companion operation, Cuvée Escapes, rents the properties to generate income during the hold period. Over time the enterprise evolved into today's Cuvée, curating a collection of private villas, chalets and estates in destinations such as Los Cabos, Vail, Lana'i and New York City.

Mueller holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) from the University of Wisconsin, and describes himself publicly as a "visionary, philanthropist, investor and leader." Note: while aggregator and firm classifications list him as an angel/seed investor, the strongest publicly verifiable record of his investing is the Cuvée Ventures real-estate fund and his career leading technology companies — documentation of individual startup seed checks is limited.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Aligned incentives / no quick-buck mentality: In his own words on the Cuvée model — *"A lot of people who started these destination clubs were out to make a quick buck. I pay myself zero — I make money the same way the investors make money."*
  • Cash, not leverage: His real-estate funds bought properties with cash and covered carrying costs through rental income, deliberately avoiding the leverage that hurt competitors during the real-estate downturn.
  • Return-driven, patient hold: He has projected potential returns of roughly 5–12% annually without leverage on the real-estate strategy; the first fund's investors were reported to have realized returns as high as ~82% over a three-year period.
  • Exclusive, limited-investor structure: He deliberately limited early funds to a small number of high-net-worth investors, selling full shares priced around $1.35M.
  • Operator's eye: His technology-CEO background (Imageware, Ariba, JD Edwards, IBM) suggests a bias toward experienced leadership, clear go-to-market strategy, and a credible path to exit — the hallmarks of the companies he ran and sold.

Notable Investments

  • Cuvée Ventures (founder, ~2005/2006): Private real-estate equity fund; raised ~$20M in its first fund with full shares at ~$1.35M, followed by multiple subsequent funds.
  • Cuvée / Cuvée Escapes: Portfolio of ultra-luxury beach, mountain, city and leisure residences with five-star amenities in locales including Los Cabos (Mexico), Vail (Colorado), Lana'i (Hawaii) and New York City.
  • Ariba (President & CEO, 1999–2001): Led the publicly traded B2B procurement software pioneer (later acquired by SAP).
  • Imageware Corporation (President & CEO, 1996–1999): Built a leading position in 3D-modeling software and sold the company.
  • *(No individually named startup angel/seed portfolio companies were found in public sources; treat the "seed" designation as a firm/aggregator classification rather than a documented deal list.)*
