Background
Lawrence Chu is a Hong Kong-based investor and entrepreneur best known as the founder and chairman of BlackPine, a private investment company focused on transformative industries. Public biographies describe BlackPine’s focus as blockchain, AI/ML, alternative protein, eSports, carbon neutrality, quantum computing, space exploration, and other new economy sectors.
Chu began his career at UBS Warburg in the technology and M&A investment-banking groups in London and Hong Kong. He later worked in the Chairman’s office at EMI Music, then returned to Asia as a portfolio manager at UBS O’Connor. The University of Chicago’s Polsky Center profile says he has more than 15 years of international investment experience and has provided capital and advice to companies including VSFG, Kenetic, Lu.com, C2FO, WH Group, and Oriente.
He graduated from the University of Chicago with a BA in Economics in 2001. Other public profiles list earlier schooling at Chinese International School and St. George’s School. Outside investing, Chu founded The Chu Foundation in 2010 and has been active in arts organizations including Tate’s Asia-Pacific Acquisitions Committee and the Smart Museum of Art.
In digital assets, Chu co-founded Kenetic, whose own site says it has invested in early-stage blockchain and crypto technology since 2016. He also co-founded and chaired Venture Smart Financial Holdings / VSFG, described by VSFG and conference biographies as Hong Kong’s first SFC-approved virtual asset manager. More recently, he has been identified as co-founder and CEO of IDA, a Hong Kong-based fiat-referenced stablecoin issuer, and as co-founder of OSN.
