Lee Rand

Lee Rand is a long-time early-stage technology investor with more than 15 years in venture capital and a prior operating career at both startups and large corporations. He spent roughly 14 years at Santa Fe–based Sun Mountain Capital, joining in 2009 as a Partner and sitting on the Investment Committees of all of the firm's investment programs. In 2025 he transitioned from Partner to an advisory role at Sun Mountain, and around May 2024 he was announced as a Partner at Cottonwood Technology Fund, a deep-tech VC with offices in the U.S. (New Mexico) and the Netherlands — the two firms had already co-invested in roughly nine portfolio companies before he joined Cottonwood.

Before entering venture capital, Rand built and ran technology businesses on the operating side. He founded Knogee, a semantic search company, and earlier worked at Intel — running business development for Intel's consumer electronics group and launching and managing the product marketing and standards team for Intel's blade-based server initiatives. He led product management at semiconductor startup Netboost, which was acquired by Intel, and earlier did consulting work at Ernst & Young.

Rand holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a dual BA in Computer Science and Mathematics from Cornell University. At Sun Mountain he has served as a board member of portfolio companies including Skorpios Technologies, iD90t (iD90 Travel), mPower, First Crop, and Relevant Traffic, and as a board observer at 3D Glass Solutions — reflecting a hands-on, board-level engagement style with the companies he backs.

• Strong semiconductor, photonics, and advanced-materials orientation, consistent with his operating background at Intel/Netboost and board seats at companies like Skorpios Technologies and 3D Glass Solutions.
• At Sun Mountain, deployment of New Mexico state funds into local startups has been a core strategy — i.e., backing companies tied to the New Mexico / Southwest innovation ecosystem and university/national-lab spinouts.
• Brings a builder-operator's lens: having founded a company and led product at startups acquired by Intel, he gravitates toward technical founders commercializing defensible IP, and takes active board/board-observer roles.
