Background
Lenard Marcus has spent nearly two decades at Edison Partners, a growth-equity firm managing about $1.7 billion in assets. He joined the firm in 2005 as a member of the business development team, was elevated to Partner in 2014, and was promoted to General Partner effective November 1, 2017. At Edison he leads Mid-Atlantic investing, co-leads the firm's Healthcare IT practice, and launched and leads its enterprise security / cybersecurity practice. Over his tenure he has led roughly 10 financings (including nine new investments) and served as a director of 11 portfolio companies.
Before Edison, Marcus built an operating and finance background. He began his career at IBM as a Financial Analyst for IBM Global Services, where he oversaw an ~$80 million budget and worked to reduce project costs across the West region. He then moved to Princeton eCom, an online bill-payment company, where he managed B2C implementations and led B2C product development, and he later worked in healthcare investment banking at Wachovia Securities.
Marcus holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA (concentrations in Finance and Management) from Columbia Business School. He is active in the Mid-Atlantic venture ecosystem, having served as a board member of the Maryland Venture Fund and the Greater Baltimore Technology Council.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at the growth stage, writing initial checks of roughly $10M–$40M into companies with about $10M–$30M in revenue — well past the seed/angel phase.
- Concentrates in Healthcare IT, Vertical SaaS & AI, enterprise security/cybersecurity, and fintech, deliberately backing companies outside Silicon Valley (with a personal focus on the Mid-Atlantic).
- Flexible on structure: minority growth equity, buyouts, recapitalizations, spinouts, and secondary purchases, supported by Edison's "Edison Edge" value-creation platform.
- On what earns his trust in a meeting, Marcus advises founders: *"Be prepared for every meeting beyond cursory discussion. It will enable you to gain trust that eclipses perceived limitations."*
- His backer's pitch (per Field Effect) positions Edison as a lead investor for Series A/B rounds in security and healthcare software.
