Lidong Zhang

Zhang Lidong was born in 1979 in Yonghe County, Linfen, Shanxi Province, and graduated from the Shanxi University of Finance and Economics. He later earned an EMBA from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB). He spent roughly eight years in traditional print journalism, joining the *Jinghua Times* (京华时报 / Beijing Times) in 2002, where he initially covered the energy and pharmaceutical beats before moving to automotive reporting. He rose to become a vice-president on the paper's editorial committee and director of its advertising center — experience that gave him deep expertise in media operations and advertising sales.

In 2013, at age 34, Zhang was personally recruited by ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming as a partner and Senior Vice President, with the core mandate of monetizing Jinri Toutiao (Today's Headlines), ByteDance's flagship news-aggregation app. He is widely described in Chinese tech media as ByteDance's "财神爷" (god of wealth / chief rainmaker).
