Background
Linda Broekhuizen is Chairwoman and Independent Director of EDFI Management Company, the Brussels-based platform owned by European development finance institutions. EDFI MC appointed her Chair of its Board of Directors on 27 May 2026 in Lugano, succeeding Søren Peter Andreasen. The company describes itself as a multilaterally owned impact asset manager delivering blended-finance solutions for European DFIs, development banks, and private-sector investors in frontier markets.
Before EDFI MC, Broekhuizen spent more than 20 years at FMO, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank. She joined FMO in 2000 after beginning her career at Fortis Bank in the Financial Institutions team for Latin America. At FMO she held roles including Manager Sustainability Development, Manager Agribusiness, Food & Water, Director Financial Institutions, and, from 1 January 2014, Chief Investment Officer and member of the Management Board.
As FMO CIO, she was responsible for the bank’s global investment portfolio across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. FMO later credited her with founding the Agribusiness, Food & Water team, helping drive the bank’s sustainability and ESG approach, and supporting FMO’s institutional-investor mobilization and blended-finance strategy, including venture capital and forestry initiatives. In October 2020 she became FMO’s interim CEO, serving until Michael Jongeneel took over on 1 September 2021; she then continued as adviser to the Management Board until 28 February 2022.
Broekhuizen also holds several non-executive governance roles. EDFI MC lists her post-FMO roles as Chair of the Board of the European Fund for Southeast Europe, Chair of Foodvalley NL, and member of the Supervisory Boards of Triple Jump and Climate Fund Managers. Public profiles also cite master’s degrees in International Relations and Business Administration and a postgraduate program in Corporate Social Responsibility Management completed in 2010.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- EDFI MC’s mission is to “empower entrepreneurship in frontier markets” by using blended finance to bridge private-sector investment gaps.
- EDFI MC focuses on business models, technologies, and geographies where other investors cannot operate at the desired scale because of risk, resources, or investment criteria.
- The platform provides catalytic capital through AgriFI and ElectriFI to accelerate market development, build track records, and create future pipelines for DFIs and private investors.
- EDFI MC uses EFSD+ guarantees to de-risk European DFI investments in emerging markets; the EU has allocated €1.4 billion in guarantees to EDFI MC across seven programs.
- Broekhuizen’s own FMO writing emphasizes partnerships and de-risking: she argued that partnerships “create great potential to de-risk” challenging markets and that FMO aims to catalyze commercial investors to co-invest in developing markets.
- Her historical sector focus at FMO maps to financial institutions, energy, and agribusiness/food/water, with later emphasis on sustainability, ESG, institutional-investor mobilization, blended finance, venture capital, and forestry.
Notable Investments
- FrieslandCampina Pakistan / Engro Foods: FMO invested €40 million alongside Royal FrieslandCampina and IFC in the 2016 acquisition of a 51% stake in Engro Foods, Pakistan’s second-largest dairy company; Broekhuizen wrote about endorsing the deal as an example of partnership-driven development finance.
- Climate Investor One: Green Climate Fund committed $100 million via FMO to Climate Investor One, executed by Climate Fund Managers, to finance renewable-energy projects in Africa, Latin America, and Asia; Broekhuizen publicly supported the program as FMO CIO.
- &Green: FMO and public funds committed US$58 million in 2021 to the sustainable agriculture and forest-protection fund &Green, including Mobilising Finance for Forests capital.
- Treevive: FMO announced a US$2.5 million seed commitment to Treevive, a global carbon platform for forestry-sector carbon projects, as part of its forestry and blended-finance strategy.
- EDFI MC / AgriFI and ElectriFI: EDFI MC’s market-development facilities invest in private-sector renewable-energy and agriculture businesses, using catalytic capital to build investable pipelines.
- EDFI MC / EFP and ICCF: EDFI MC administers co-investment vehicles backed by nine European DFIs and the EIB, with €680 million committed in 2022 to support private sustainable growth in developing and emerging markets.
