Background

Linda Vickers is a long-serving Australian superannuation industry executive with more than 40 years' experience across superannuation, insurance and wealth management. She joined BUSSQ — the Building Unions Superannuation Scheme (Queensland), a profit-to-member industry fund serving the building and construction sector — in 1998 as its risk and compliance manager. She rose to Chief Operating Officer in 2013 and, following an executive restructure, was appointed Chief Executive Officer in October 2016, succeeding David O'Sullivan.

As CEO, Vickers led BUSSQ during a period of consolidation pressure across the Australian super industry, positioning the smaller, niche fund around close member relationships and its specialist building-and-construction focus rather than scale. During her tenure the fund navigated notable governance events, including the board's 2019 decision to terminate the fund's Chief Investment Officer — a move reported as bypassing the chief executive. She retired as CEO in 2020 after 22 years with the organisation.

In April 2022 (appointed 26 April 2022) Vickers returned to BUSSQ as a Member Representative Director. She chairs the fund's Investment Committee and has served on the Audit and Risk Committee, including as its chair as at 30 June 2024, giving her direct oversight of BUSSQ's institutional investment program and governance. She also holds a directorship at MATES in Construction (Qld & NT), an industry suicide-prevention and mental-health charity.

Her qualifications reflect a deep technical grounding in the sector: a Master of Organisational Leadership from the University of Melbourne, plus diplomas in life insurance, superannuation management and financial planning. She is a Fellow of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (FASFA) and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates within an institutional / superannuation-fund investment context, not angel or venture investing. As Chair of BUSSQ's Investment Committee she oversees the strategy for a diversified, member-focused super fund (BUSSQ passed roughly A$5bn in funds under management during her era).
  • Fund positioning under her leadership emphasised staying niche: BUSSQ publicly argued that smaller funds could survive through specialist strategies and strong member relationships rather than merger-driven scale.
  • Investment orientation is that of a long-horizon, member-benefit institutional allocator for the building and construction industry — governed by trustee-board oversight, audit/risk discipline, and asset-class diversification rather than early-stage equity checks.
  • No evidence of personal angel investing, seed-stage deal activity, or a stated startup investment thesis was found.

Notable Investments

  • No individual startup or angel/seed portfolio companies could be found — this reflects that Linda Vickers is a superannuation fund executive/director, not an early-stage private investor. Her "portfolio" is effectively the diversified institutional investment program of the BUSSQ fund, overseen at board/committee level rather than as named personal deals.
