Background

Lisa R. Goldberg is a mathematician-turned-financial-economist whose career spans academia, quantitative-finance industry research, and asset management. She earned a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Brandeis University, and began her career as a research mathematician working on dynamical systems generated by rational maps of the Riemann sphere. She held academic positions at UC Berkeley, the City University of New York (CUNY), the Institute for Advanced Study, l'Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship (1987).

In 1993 she left academia for quantitative finance, joining Barra (later part of MSCI), where she spent roughly 19 years building factor-based risk models and portfolio-management tools. She rose to Executive Director of Research at MSCI, directing research for pension funds, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds with an emphasis on extreme-event ("tail") risk, asset allocation, and credit. She co-developed credit-derivative assessment methods (with Kay Giesecke) and holds multiple patents on risk models and credit analysis.

In August 2013 she joined Aperio Group as Director/Head of Research, where she works with strategists and portfolio managers to develop and refine Aperio's tax-managed, index-based investment strategies. Aperio was acquired by BlackRock (announced 2020, closed 2021) and now anchors BlackRock's direct-indexing / tax-managed SMA offering. In parallel, Goldberg is Co-Director of the Consortium for Data Analytics in Risk (CDAR) at UC Berkeley and an Adjunct Professor of Economics and Statistics, bridging academic and industry research.

She is the author of the book *Portfolio Risk Analysis* and 40+ peer-reviewed articles, sits on the editorial board of the *Financial Analysts Journal* and the conference board of the *Journal of Investment Management*, and was a co-recipient of the Graham & Dodd Scroll Award (2012) for the paper "Will My Risk Parity Strategy Outperform?" Her research ranges widely — from topology and dynamical systems to quantitative finance, sustainable investing, causal inference, and sports statistics (including "hot hand" analysis). She is married to mathematician Ken Ribet.

Investment Thesis & Focus

*(Her "thesis" is a research/asset-management philosophy for public-equity SMAs — not a private-market venture thesis.)*

  • Tax-aware, index-based investing: Central to her work at Aperio is direct indexing with systematic tax-loss harvesting to improve after-tax returns of index-tracking equity portfolios.
  • Diversifying concentrated stock positions tax-efficiently: Recent research (2024–2025) shows long/short "130/30" and "200/100" extensions can reduce the active weight of a concentrated position to ≤5% within ~10 years, tax-neutrally, across nearly all historical scenarios tested.
  • Rigorous, evidence-based risk modeling: Her published stance is that after realistic financing and trading costs, "the long-horizon performance of risk-parity strategies is qualitatively similar to that of traditional strategies" — a hallmark skepticism toward strategies that don't survive real-world costs.
  • Values-based / sustainable (ESG) investing: She researches how environmental and values-based screens interact with risk and return, and serves as an expert judge for Haas Business School's Moskowitz Prize for Socially Responsible Investing.
  • Bridging academia and industry: Through CDAR she deliberately integrates academic best practices with practitioner data and problems.

Notable Investments

  • Aperio Group (as Head of Research): Helped build the tax-managed, index-based SMA platform (~$41B AUM) that BlackRock acquired to power its direct-indexing business.
  • BlackRock Aperio Direct Indexing SMAs: Ongoing research underpinning BlackRock's tax-managed equity SMA product line.
  • 2025 tax-loss harvesting results (Aperio): In 2025, even as the S&P 500 rose ~17.9%, Aperio Direct Indexing reportedly harvested roughly $3B in losses across tax-managed accounts.
