Background
Lucas Evans is a private-equity investor whose career spans control buyouts, M&A, and capital markets across retail/real estate and aerospace/defense. He earned a BS in Finance from Georgetown University, an MPS in Real Estate from Cornell University, and an MBA from INSEAD. He first built his reputation at NRDC Equity Partners — the investment firm associated with Richard Baker — and its successor, the Hudson's Bay Company, where over roughly nine years (2007–2015) he served as a Partner/Senior Vice President and later Head of M&A (2012–2015), leading mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, treasury, and investor-relations activity. In that period he played an instrumental role in transactions including the acquisitions of Hudson's Bay, Zellers, Saks Fifth Avenue and Galeria Kaufhof, and the company's IPO, helping grow a family office into a multinational retail and real-estate conglomerate.
From 2016 to 2018 Evans was a Principal in the Private Equity Group at Ares Management, one of the largest global alternative asset managers. In November 2018 he joined Pine Island Capital Partners — the private-equity firm founded that year by former NYSE/Merrill Lynch executive John A. Thain, Philip A. Cooper and Clyde Tuggle. Pine Island is notable for pairing an investment team with a roster of senior former government and military figures (including Lloyd Austin, Michèle Flournoy, and Tom Daschle) and, while generalist, concentrates on aerospace, defense and government-services deals. As a Partner and Investment Committee member there, Evans sat on the board of InVeris Training Solutions and served as a board observer for Precinmac.
In January 2023 Evans returned to NRDC Equity Partners as Managing Partner, where he now leads the firm's investment activity. NRDC has remained active in retail and real estate, including cross-border restructuring plays in Europe.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Focuses on control buyouts and growth investments in established middle-market companies, not early-stage/seed startups.
- At Pine Island, invested primarily in aerospace, defense, and government services — precision manufacturing and training/simulation businesses with defense end-markets — leveraging the firm's differentiated network of former senior government and military officials for "better access, better information and better expertise."
- At NRDC, focus reflects the firm's retail and real-estate heritage (the Hudson's Bay / Saks / Galeria lineage), including distressed and restructuring acquisitions.
- Deep functional emphasis on M&A execution, capital markets, treasury, and investor relations — the skill set he built running these functions at Hudson's Bay Company.
Notable Investments
- InVeris Training Solutions — Global provider of live-fire and virtual weapons/tactical training systems for military and law enforcement (formerly Meggitt Training Systems). Acquired by Pine Island on July 1, 2020; Evans served on its board of directors.
- Precinmac (Precinmac Precision Machining) — Precision-machining manufacturer with U.S. and Canadian facilities serving aerospace and defense; Evans was a board observer. Pine Island exited Precinmac on October 14, 2024.
- Hudson's Bay Company / Saks Fifth Avenue / Zellers / Galeria Kaufhof — Earlier in his career (NRDC/HBC, 2007–2015), Evans helped lead these acquisitions and the company's IPO.
- Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof — In April 2024, NRDC Equity Partners (with BB Kapital SA) acquired the German department-store chain out of insolvency, a deal in the firm's current retail/real-estate mandate.
