Background

Lucius E. Burch III is a Nashville-based venture investor and longtime chairman and CEO of Burch Investment Group, described in SEC filings as a private venture capital firm formerly known as Massey Burch Investment Group. A 2003 Corrections Corporation of America proxy states that he had held that chairman and CEO role since October 1989 and also served on CCA-related boards, including Old CCA beginning in 1998 and CCA’s board beginning in 2000.

Burch is closely associated with Nashville’s early venture-capital ecosystem. The Nashville Entrepreneur Center described him in 2021 as having a nearly 50-year career in venture capital, with specialties in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and management consulting. In a 2022 profile and podcast summary, the Entrepreneur Center called him one of Nashville’s original major venture-capital figures and said he helped take 17 companies to the New York Stock Exchange, including KFC, Wendy’s, and HCA.

Before later Burch Investment Group activity, Burch was involved with Massey Burch Capital / Massey Burch Investment Group, a Nashville venture firm connected to Jack C. Massey. Public sources describe Massey Burch as investing in early-stage companies in information technology, communications, internet solutions, and healthcare services, especially in the Southern United States. Burch-related later-stage board and angel activity includes Wealth Access, Medaxion, PatientFocus, and the Lucius E. Burch III Family Foundation.

Education records in public profile sources list Burch as an undergraduate alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. A separate 2012 PatientFocus announcement identifies Lucius E. Burch IV as a Belmont University graduate and manager of Burch family partnerships, so care is needed not to conflate the two generations when reviewing Burch Investment Group records.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Burch is repeatedly described as a “people” investor. The Entrepreneur Center’s podcast summary calls him a “self-proclaimed people investor,” and its 2021 Hall of Fame announcement says Nashville founders often cite him as the person who believed in them, provided first-round funding, and mentored them.
  • Historical Massey Burch focus: early-stage companies in information technology, communications, internet solutions, and healthcare services, with a Southern U.S. emphasis.
  • Later Burch Investment Group activity includes direct venture deals through family partnerships, with public examples in healthcare services, healthcare IT, fintech, and business services.
  • A founder-facing principle attributed to Burch by Nashville investor Julia Polk is that “being early is just as bad as being wrong” and “protect your nut,” indicating a strong bias toward timing, capital efficiency, and not relying on repeated rescue financing.
  • Public sources do not show a current formal fund thesis, open application process, or current check-size policy.
