Background

Lucy McQuilken is a Boston-based finance executive who has spent much of her career as the CFO for consumer-technology and e-commerce startups, and who invests personally as an angel. She earned a BS in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from Duke University and, per aggregator profiles, later completed an MBA. Rather than a traditional corporate-finance path, she has built a reputation as an operator's CFO — repeatedly stepping into fast-growing, venture-backed consumer companies to build finance functions, run fundraising, and negotiate term sheets.

Her operating roles include CFO of WHOOP, the Boston wearable-technology company, from April 2018 to May 2020, where she also served on the board; CFO of Droplette, the Boston-based skincare company known for delivering "super-active" ingredients like collagen and retinol via micro-drops, from 2020 to 2023; and Managing Partner at AtoB Consulting (roughly 2013–2018), where she provided fractional/outsourced CFO services to early-stage technology companies. Most recently she has worked as a strategic financial consultant with Farsight (from late 2023). Her current affiliation is with ThirdChannel, the Cambridge, Massachusetts retail-execution platform that pairs brand experts with data and technology to improve in-store performance.

As a consulting and fractional CFO, McQuilken has described herself as an experienced fundraiser and term-sheet negotiator, having helped clients raise on the order of $52.5M across roughly a dozen seed, Series A, and Series B transactions. She has also given back to the startup community as a Mentor-in-Residence at Techstars and as a speaker at investor and finance events such as youngStartup Ventures and AICPA conferences.

Her angel-investing activity began early in the last decade, most notably with an investment in PillPack, the mail-order pharmacy startup, at its Series A stage (2013–2014). PillPack went on to be acquired by Amazon in 2018, giving McQuilken an early exit and cementing her credibility as an operator-investor in the consumer-health space.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an individual angel at the seed / early stage, with the ability to follow a company into an early priced round (her PillPack check was at the Series A stage).
  • Sector focus mirrors her operating career: consumer and consumer-tech, e-commerce, and health/wellness (digital health, wearables, skincare) — areas where she can add hands-on value.
  • Brings a CFO's lens to diligence: she looks closely at fundraising readiness, unit economics, and term-sheet structure, having negotiated numerous seed–Series B rounds for clients.
  • Values founders building in the greater Boston / New England ecosystem, where most of her network, board seats, and prior deals are concentrated.
  • Tends to back companies where operational and financial discipline matter — i.e., consumer businesses that need to scale efficiently rather than pure "growth-at-all-costs" plays.

Notable Investments

  • PillPack — Mail-order/online pharmacy that packages medications by dose; McQuilken invested at the Series A stage (2013–2014). Acquired by Amazon in 2018 (becoming Amazon Pharmacy), her most prominent exit.
  • WHOOP (board & operator, not a disclosed angel check) — Human-performance wearable company where she served as CFO and board member; now a late-stage (Series F/G) company valued in the billions.
  • Zagster — Bike-share/mobility startup where she served as a board member.
  • (Portfolio trackers characterize her broader focus as Consumer and HealthTech, all US-based; individual check details are not publicly disclosed.)
