Background

Luke Matthews is a Partner at Maven Capital Partners, one of the UK's larger regionally focused private equity and alternative-asset managers. He joined Maven in April 2019 from Connection Capital, where as an Investment Director he completed a range of growth capital and buyout transactions. He was promoted from Investment Director to Partner on 28 June 2023, a promotion Maven attributed to his role in building the firm's presence across the Thames Valley and the wider South of England.

Earlier in his career, Luke trained at KPMG, then moved into in-house corporate development at media group UBM plc, where he executed a programme of international acquisitions and disposals, before entering private equity with Nova Capital. He brings more than 15 years of corporate finance and private equity experience. He read Economics and Management at the University of Oxford and is a qualified Corporate Treasurer.

In his current role, Luke is responsible for deal origination and execution across the South of England, operating out of Maven's Bristol and Reading offices, and sits on the boards of a number of Maven portfolio companies. His deal focus is primarily growth capital, with a notable concentration in technology and software businesses. Maven describes his key sector experience as software, manufacturing and TMT. On the personal side, Maven's team page notes he is a family man with a spaniel and daughters, and a Bath Rugby supporter.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage/type: Growth capital and lower-mid-market private equity/buyout — established, revenue-generating businesses rather than seed or pre-revenue startups.
  • Check size: Roughly £1m–£6m in growth capital equity per deal, within Maven's broader £100k–£20m transaction range across its funds (including regional vehicles such as the South West Investment Fund, which writes £150k–£5m equity cheques).
  • Sectors: Technology-led — software/SaaS, AdTech, cyber security, big-data analytics — plus TMT and manufacturing.
  • Geography: South of England and the Thames Valley; deal flow sourced through Maven's Bristol and Reading teams.
  • What makes him say yes: Scalable, "plug-and-play" technology that solves concrete customer pain points. On the 2025 Digilytics deal he cited the company's "strong potential" and its "plug-and-play AI technology, which is solving critical pain points for lenders" — signalling a preference for proven, differentiated products with clear commercial traction.

Notable Investments

  • Digilytics — AI-enabled SaaS platform automating document-heavy lending processes for financial services firms; £2.5m Maven investment (December 2025), with Luke commenting on the deal.
  • Nano Interactive — AdTech specialist focused on privacy-first, intent-based audience targeting.
  • Horizon Technologies — provider of satellite monitoring/signals-intelligence systems.
  • Cardinality — big-data analytics business.
