- Firm

- Target Company Profile
- Established companies with strong market positions, durable cash flows, and long-term compounding potential; often family- or founder-associated businesses
- Sector Focus

- HAL Holding N.V. is registered in Monaco (5, Avenue des Citronniers, MC 98000); principal investment operations are run from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Groot is a Dutch national.
Background
Melchert Frans "Mel" Groot is a Dutch executive who led HAL Holding N.V., one of the Netherlands' largest and most discreet investment holding companies. He was educated as a civil engineer at the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft) and earned an MBA from Columbia University in New York. He spent essentially his entire career at HAL, joining in the late 1980s and serving the group for roughly 35 years before his retirement.
Groot became a member of HAL's Executive Board in 2003 and was appointed Chairman of the Executive Board (the group's CEO role) in 2014. Earlier in his career he ran HAL's optical-retail businesses, serving as CEO of Pearle Europe B.V. and subsequently of GrandVision — the global optical retailer (Pearle, Vision Express, GrandOptical, EyeWish) that HAL built and later took public, before it was sold to EssilorLuxottica in 2021. He also chaired GrandVision's Supervisory Board.
He stepped down from HAL's Executive Board effective 31 March 2024 and was succeeded as Chairman/CEO by J.N. (Jaap) van Wiechen, a long-serving board member. Under Groot, HAL operated as a patient, long-horizon owner — the group is often described by investors as a "discreet long-term compounder" — deploying capital into controlling and strategic stakes rather than short-term financial trades.
Beyond HAL, Groot has held several supervisory and non-executive positions, most notably as Vice-Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Koninklijke Vopak N.V. (the listed tank-storage group in which HAL holds a majority interest) and as a member of the Supervisory Board of Anthony Veder Group N.V. He has also been associated with board roles at portfolio and related companies such as Safilo.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as a long-term controlling or strategic owner, not as an early-stage/angel backer — HAL holds positions for years or decades and compounds value rather than seeking quick exits.
- Targets established businesses with strong competitive positions and durable cash flow across dredging/marine (Boskalis), storage & logistics (Vopak), e-commerce/retail (Coolblue), media (FD Mediagroep), greenhouse/agri-tech (GreenV), and energy/materials technology (Broadview), among others.
- Historically built and scaled optical retail (Pearle, GrandVision) from a HAL platform into a global public company — a template of buy, build, professionalize, and eventually list or sell.
- Comfortable with both listed and private stakes, and willing to increase ownership opportunistically (e.g., raising HAL's effective interest in Vopak above 50% in 2024).
- Prioritizes operational strength and management quality over financial engineering; HAL's culture is famously low-profile, patient, and value-oriented.
Notable Investments
- Vopak (Koninklijke Vopak N.V.) — Listed global tank-storage and logistics operator; HAL's effective interest rose from ~48% to ~50.25% as of 30 June 2024. Groot serves as Vice-Chairman of its Supervisory Board.
- Boskalis — Dutch dredging and offshore-energy services group; taken private by HAL. 2024 revenues ~€4.36bn with EBITDA ~€1.16bn.
- Coolblue — Dutch omnichannel electronics/e-commerce and energy retailer; HAL acquired a control position (~49%) in August 2024.
- GrandVision / Pearle Europe — Global optical retailer built by HAL; Groot was CEO and later Supervisory Board chairman. Sold to EssilorLuxottica in 2021 (a landmark HAL exit).
- GreenV — Greenhouse technology and horticultural systems group (~74% HAL ownership).
- FD Mediagroep — Dutch financial-economic media group (Het Financieele Dagblad, BNR Nieuwsradio); HAL has held a majority (~98%) since 2010.
- Broadview and Prodrive Technologies — energy/materials technology and high-tech industrial holdings within the HAL portfolio.
