Background

Maitlan Cramer is a Partner and Co-Head of Software Investments on Bow River Capital's Software Growth Equity (SGE) team, where he is responsible for managing all stages of the investment process — from sourcing and transaction through portfolio management and exit. Bow River Capital is a Denver-based alternative asset manager whose SGE platform invests in vertical SaaS and HCM software businesses; the team closed its $605M Software Growth Equity Fund II in 2023 (above its $500M target), following a $160M debut fund in 2019.

Before joining Bow River, Cramer was a Founder and Principal of Grand Ventures, a Midwest early-stage venture capital firm he helped launch in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2017. Earlier in his career he was an Associate in the Technology Investment Banking Division of Wedbush Securities in San Francisco, and held roles at Signal Hill Capital Group and MEC Strategies Group. He began his finance career as an FP&A analyst at IQNavigator while in school.

Cramer earned a BSBA in Finance from the University of Denver and holds his Series 79 and Series 63 licenses. In 2018 he was recognized in the Grand Rapids Business Journal's "40 Under 40." He has served on the boards of multiple SGE portfolio companies, including Altvia, HRSoft, ProductPlan, RippleWorx, Spear Technologies, AbsenceSoft, and Insurium.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage / structure: Provides the *first institutional capital* to bootstrapped, founder-led software companies, typically taking majority-control (and sometimes minority) growth-equity positions; equity checks roughly $25M–$50M.
  • Company profile: Targets cash-flow-breakeven-to-positive SaaS businesses (roughly $3M–$15M revenue) with a solid customer base, compelling value proposition, and "durable annual recurring revenue."
  • Sector lens: Vertical SaaS, human capital management software, and tech-enabled services — with a stated emphasis on "messy, complex, compliance-centric use cases for the world's best-run companies."
  • Value-add: The SGE team applies a "Performance Playbook" of operational support, go-to-market improvement, and executive-talent networks to scale founder-led businesses.
  • In his words: Cramer has described the strategy as "thematically allocating the SGE fund's growth capital into leading SaaS firms solving complex, compliance-centric use cases."
