Background
Manu Kumar Jain (born 25 January 1981 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh) is one of India's most prominent consumer-technology executives. He holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi and an MBA from IIM Calcutta (2007). His early career included a stint at Headstrong (later acquired by Genpact) building software for investment banks, followed by consulting at McKinsey & Company from 2007 to roughly 2011.
In 2011–2012 he co-founded the fashion e-commerce portal Jabong.com and served as its Managing Director from February 2012 until January 2014, growing it into one of India's largest online retail brands before it was eventually acquired by Myntra/Flipkart. He then became Xiaomi's first employee in India — an introduction reportedly facilitated by his former McKinsey colleague Naveen Tewari (InMobi), who connected him with Xiaomi co-founder Bin Lin.
At Xiaomi, Jain launched the India business in February 2014, was promoted to Global Vice President in January 2017, and led Xiaomi to overtake Samsung as India's largest smartphone brand by late 2017. Along the way he collected recognitions including BW's 40 Under 40 (2018), Forbes India's Best CEO (MNC) (2019), and World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2019). He departed Xiaomi in January 2023.
Since October 2023, Jain has led the India expansion of G42, the Abu Dhabi–based artificial-intelligence group (India CEO / Senior VP for Asia and Latin America), assembling a founding team and pursuing AI partnerships and infrastructure in the Indian market. His investing/board footprint predates this role and reflects his network as a repeat operator rather than a dedicated venture professional.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests and advises as an operator-angel — someone who has built and scaled two large consumer businesses (Jabong, Xiaomi India), so his value-add skews toward go-to-market, distribution, brand-building, and scaling operations in India.
- Sector affinities visible from his board/advisory involvement: consumer internet/e-commerce, fintech/lending, and digital media/content; more recently, AI given his G42 role.
- His public operating philosophy centers on product quality as the non-negotiable foundation — he has said, *"If the product is not great, we cannot succeed no matter what we do."*
- Note: There is no publicly documented dedicated fund, formal check-size, or large syndicated angel portfolio under his name. Caution — several unrelated "Manu Jain" angel profiles exist (e.g., the founder of Carbun8 who invested in Fixcraft); those should not be attributed to this Manu Kumar Jain.
Notable Investments
- KrazyBee (KreditBee) — Bengaluru-based consumer fintech/lending startup; Jain served as a board member during his post-Jabong period.
- Hungama Digital Media — Indian digital entertainment/content company; Jain held a board role. (Separately, Xiaomi itself invested in Hungama in 2016 for content partnerships.)
- Beyond these board involvements, no large, individually verifiable angel-cheque portfolio is on the public record for him.
