Background
Manuel E. Gonzalez is a food and agriculture banker, operator, and innovation leader best known for building Rabobank's global startup-innovation engine. As Global Head of Food & Ag Startup Innovation at Rabobank — one of the world's leading agrifood-focused financial institutions — he created the bank's Food & Agriculture Startup Innovation Group and founded its flagship platforms FoodBytes! and TERRA (the latter an agtech accelerator), which connected the food and agriculture innovation ecosystem to the bank's clients and capital. Earlier in his Rabobank tenure he served as Managing Director and General Manager of Rabobank West Coast in the US, working with corporate clients, and as General Manager of Rabobank Mexico.
Before banking, Gonzalez was an entrepreneur in his own right: he founded and ran González Guzmán Alimentos, a yogurt and sour cream production and distribution company in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico. He holds an undergraduate degree from Universidad Panamericana and an MBA from Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business (Washington, D.C., mid-1990s).
In February 2019 he launched Global RIFF (Revolution in Food Fund), a foodtech venture fund built around a "technology-plus-human-intelligence" model: a proprietary discovery platform screens 1,500+ early-stage food startups, with a shortlist then evaluated by a panel of seasoned food-industry executives and entrepreneurs (its 13-person leadership/advisory roster has included co-founders of Mighty Leaf Tea, AgFunder, and the Future Food Institute). The fund's stated purpose is to address a "structurally unsustainable" food system — dwindling resources, food waste, allergies, obesity, and food-safety challenges.
In February 2021, Gonzalez joined AgFunder as Partner, teaming with founding partners Michael Dean and Rob Leclerc to manage the firm's growing set of foodtech and agtech funds. AgFunder closed its fourth early-stage fund at $102 million in 2025 and, following its acquisition of the ~$100 million Blue Horizon Growth Fund, reached roughly $300 million in assets under management.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage: Pre-seed and seed-stage food and agriculture startups.
- Volume-driven sourcing: "You need to see thousands" of companies — he argues that screening at scale (via tech + advisory panel) avoids the bias of backing the best *visible* option rather than the genuinely best available one.
- Founder depth over outsourcing: Looks for founders who "really know their ingredients and how to use them," rather than teams that simply hand product off to co-packers.
- Market-growth filter: Prioritizes categories growing ~6–10% per year with the potential to double in 7–10 years — true disruption, not commodity-food's ~2% drift.
- Sector pillars: functional foods / food-as-health, improved protein (both alternative and regenerative animal protein), personalized/precision nutrition (DNA- and AI-driven), and environmentally better packaging; broadly food tech, ag tech, biohacking, food-management tech, and new food CPG.
- Capital with conviction: "I did not want to be like another $25 million fund; my goal is to create something that will really fuel the ideas" — he pairs investment with active portfolio support and an advisory ecosystem of 20+ year industry veterans to de-risk early-stage companies.
- Forward outlook (2025): expects "smart money" to flow to applied-AI solutions, cost-cutting, and startups focused on "efficiency, real health, energy delivery and food security."
Notable Investments
- ReGrained — upcycled-food company turning brewing/grain byproducts into nutritious snacks ("crunchy puffs"); Gonzalez has served as an Advisory Board Member (since ~January 2018).
- Sugarlogix — biotech startup producing rare functional sugars (e.g., prebiotic/human-milk oligosaccharides); Gonzalez has served as an Advisory Board Member (since ~January 2018).
- AgFunder portfolio (firm-level) — as Partner he helps manage AgFunder's early-stage foodtech/agtech funds (Fund IV closed at $102M in 2025) and the acquired Blue Horizon Growth Fund; specific deals attributable personally to him are not publicly broken out.
