Background
Marc Henry is a French executive best documented as Michelin’s group finance leader. In a 2018 interview with *La Jaune et la Rouge*, he said his Michelin career had already spanned more than 35 years and began in technical roles, including product-line development for truck tires. He also spent three years in the United States early in his career, giving him exposure to Michelin’s international markets.
After roughly 15 years in technical functions, Henry moved into business and finance roles. He spent seven years in the truck-tire division, first in strategic marketing and then leading the Asia region in the 2000s, based in Singapore while Michelin expanded in China, Thailand, Japan, and India. He later returned to Clermont-Ferrand to lead group management control.
Henry was appointed Michelin Group Finance Director in 2007, when Jean-Dominique Senard arrived as managing partner. For three years, he also carried operational responsibility for Michelin’s specialty-products division. In January 2018, after a group reorganization, he stepped back from that operational responsibility to focus on finance and internal operating services such as major information-systems projects.
He is an alumnus of École Polytechnique, identified as “Marc HENRY (78)” by *La Jaune et la Rouge*. In 2015, he was co-winner of France’s CFO of the Year award, alongside Laurent Guillot of Saint-Gobain. In 2019, Michelin’s executive-committee reorganization replaced him as group CFO with Yves Chapot, and public UK filings show he served as a director of Fenner Group Holdings from May 31, 2018 to July 31, 2019.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- No public source found a personal angel-investing thesis, check size, startup portfolio, or active investing platform for Marc Henry.
- Based on his public Michelin role, the strongest evidence of investment judgment is corporate M&A and capital allocation in mobility, specialty tires, engineered materials, fleet services, and performance-management systems.
- Henry described the finance function as a “Business Partner” with strategic responsibilities, including identifying business trends, focusing management attention, valuing the company for shareholders and stakeholders, and supporting external-growth projects.
- His public comments around Michelin’s Camso acquisition emphasized specialty tires as a faster-growing segment and the complementarity between Michelin and Camso.
- A founder approaching him should treat him as a senior industrial-finance operator and possible strategic advisor rather than as a verified high-volume seed angel.
Notable Investments
- Camso / Michelin acquisition, 2018: Michelin acquired Camso for US$1.36 billion, strengthening its off-the-road specialty-tire business; Henry publicly commented on the specialty-tire market and fit with Michelin.
- Fenner / Michelin acquisition, 2018: Michelin completed the acquisition of Fenner, a polymer and conveyor-belt business, for about £1.3 billion / €1.48 billion enterprise value; Henry participated in investor communications and later served as a Fenner Group Holdings director.
- Lehigh Technologies / Michelin acquisition, 2017: Michelin acquired Lehigh Technologies, a specialty-materials company using micronized rubber powder from end-of-life tires, expanding Michelin’s sustainable-materials capabilities.
- Masternaut / Michelin acquisition, 2019: Michelin acquired Masternaut, a European telematics provider, to expand fleet services and solutions; this occurred after Henry’s CFO succession process was underway, so it should be treated as a Michelin strategic transaction rather than a personal Henry investment.
