Background
Marc-Philippe Botte is a Managing Partner at Omnes Capital, the Paris-based private-equity and infrastructure firm (formerly Crédit Agricole Private Equity), where he leads the Energy Transition Infrastructure team and sits on the firm's Executive Committee. He joined Omnes in 2009 and rose through the ranks — named Partner in the Renewable Energy team in September 2016, and later Managing Partner — helping grow the firm's renewable-energy business into one of Europe's larger dedicated platforms.
Before Omnes, Botte began his career in 1998 as an assistant professor at the Free University of Brussels (ULB), and he has also taught at Université Paris-Dauphine. He then moved into investment banking, joining the M&A teams of MeesPierson / Fortis Bank in Amsterdam, and in 2001 relocated to Fortis Bank's M&A department in Paris as a Director, where he was responsible for transactions in the renewable-energy sector — the beginning of the sector specialization that defines his career.
He is a graduate of the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management. Over his time at Omnes he has helped scale the Capenergie fund franchise, which manages billions of euros of renewable assets across Europe. The team behind him has completed 30+ investments across wind, solar, hydro and biomass in France and the rest of Europe; the Capenergie 4 programme alone backed portfolios totaling ~17 GW of renewable projects across 14 countries, and Capenergie 5 closed at more than €2.05 billion in December 2024 — the largest fundraise in the firm's history.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs entrepreneurs, not just assets: In his own words — *"We don't invest in assets but instead invest in companies and the entrepreneurs that founded them."* He applies a private-equity, business-building mindset rather than a pure project-finance/asset lens.
- Mid-market platforms: Focus on mid-market renewable-energy developers and IPPs, supporting management teams as they scale from developer to independent power producer. He has signalled that a sixth-generation fund would stay *"firmly in the mid-market space."*
- Technology breadth: Onshore and offshore wind, solar PV, hydro, biomass, and increasingly battery energy storage (BESS); themes include wind repowering (e.g., Germany).
- Geography: Core Europe (France, Germany, Italy, UK) with selective OECD expansion, including Australia.
- Macro conviction: Argues the energy transition is now driven by economics rather than policy — *"Economic considerations are driving this, not ESG, which makes it unstoppable."*
- Scale: Deploys from the Capenergie series (Capenergie 5 = €2.05bn, incl. ~€250m co-investment), a differentiator he attributes to Omnes' long renewable track record.
Notable Investments
- TagEnergy — Global independent power producer (wind, solar PV, BESS). Omnes invested alongside Mirova to support TagEnergy's international project pipeline; Botte joined the TagEnergy board. It was the ninth investment of the Capenergie 4 fund and carried into the Capenergie 5 portfolio.
- Prediwatt (Prediwatt SAS) — French renewable-energy / storage company where Botte appears as an associated manager/board figure in business-registry records.
- Capenergie fund portfolios (broad) — Through Capenergie 2–5, the renewable team has backed 30+ wind, solar, hydro and biomass projects/companies across France and Europe; Capenergie 4's holdings reached ~17 GW across 14 countries.
