Background
Marco van Daele is a private-markets executive with more than two decades of experience in private equity and infrastructure investing. He joined Zurich-based SUSI Partners in September 2017 and became Chief Investment Officer on 1 January 2018, succeeding co-founder Otto von Troschke. He was subsequently elevated to Co-CEO (alongside Marius Dorfmeister) and, following a leadership reshuffle announced in December 2023, took over as the firm's sole CEO while continuing to chair its Investment Committees to preserve continuity in underwriting.
Before SUSI, van Daele worked in the infrastructure and private-equity world at Brookfield Asset Management (London) and earlier at Arpatica, building experience across markets including Zurich, Oslo, London, and Frankfurt. He completed a Program in Leadership at Stanford University Graduate School of Business (2021), on top of earlier university and study-abroad education (roughly 2000–2005).
At SUSI, van Daele leads an independent Swiss manager focused exclusively on the origination, execution, and active management of mid-market energy-transition infrastructure for institutional investors. The platform spans equity and credit across renewables, energy efficiency, storage, and electrification, with a European core and a dedicated Southeast Asia strategy. He has also served as Chairman of portfolio company Elaway, a European EV-charging operator, stepping down after its 2025 merger with Aneo Mobility.
In 2025, SUSI Partners was acquired by UK-listed specialist asset manager Gresham House, and van Daele now additionally serves as Head of Energy Transition for Gresham House, where the combined energy-transition division ranks among the ten largest in Europe by AUM (over EUR 3 billion as of late 2025). He remains an active industry voice, appearing on energy-transition panels at events such as the Infrastructure Investor Global Summit.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in energy-transition infrastructure, not early-stage startups: renewable generation, energy efficiency, storage, and electrification/e-mobility.
- Deploys across the capital structure — both equity and private credit — and across the infrastructure risk-return spectrum, from development/construction-ready to operating assets and platform build-ups.
- Operates at institutional scale for pension funds, insurers, and other institutional LPs; the combined SUSI/Gresham House energy-transition platform manages over ~EUR 3 billion.
- Geography: Europe-first, with a dedicated Southeast Asia strategy and selective OECD-market activity (SUSI has closed deals as far afield as Australia).
- Emphasizes active management and value creation — SUSI frequently takes controlling or majority positions and builds operating platforms (e.g., a majority stake in EV-charging operator Elaway) rather than passive minority checks.
- Firm positioning in its own words: SUSI focuses on "the origination, execution, and active management of mid-market energy transition infrastructure investments for institutional investors."
Notable Investments
- Elaway — European (Norwegian-founded) EV-charging infrastructure operator; SUSI's Energy Transition Fund took a majority stake in 2023, and van Daele served as Chairman. Elaway later merged with Aneo Mobility (closed mid-2025) to form a leading Nordic EV-charging platform.
- Southeast Asia energy-transition strategy — SUSI raised and deployed a dedicated fund targeting renewables and energy access across the region.
- Australian market entry — SUSI closed its first investment in Australia, extending its energy-transition infrastructure reach beyond Europe.
- Broader SUSI portfolio spans renewable generation, energy-efficiency, and energy-storage infrastructure across European and selected OECD markets.
