Background

Marcus Pillion is an industrial executive and operator currently serving as Group CEO of Reliability Won, a Battery Ventures-backed platform built to consolidate and scale asset-reliability and industrial-services companies. Battery announced in March 2024 that Pillion joined Mobius Institute as Group CEO to drive M&A, organic growth, and integration after Battery’s investment in Mobius.

Before Reliability Won, Pillion was CEO of Des-Case, a Nashville-area manufacturer of specialty filtration products for industrial lubricants. Des-Case was sold to The Timken Company in 2023; Timken described Des-Case as a manufacturer of breathers, filter elements, condition monitoring, lubrication storage, and filter systems used across the lubricant lifecycle.

From 2020, Pillion was an Operating Partner at Edgewater Capital Partners, where he was appointed to lead the firm’s Engineered Components and Systems practice. Edgewater said he would work with its transaction team on opportunities in industrial and reliability equipment, in-plant systems and services, and engineered components. Before Edgewater, he was CEO of TRITEC Performance Solutions, a global manufacturer of engineered PTFE sealing solutions and assemblies, and was involved in TRITEC’s sale to Trelleborg Sealing Solutions.

Pillion has more than 25 years of industrial-market experience across industrial equipment, reliability products and systems, in-plant services, and mission-critical components. Public bios cite prior executive experience at TRITEC Performance Solutions, Colfax Fluid Handling, EagleBurgmann, SKF, John Crane, and other industrial businesses. He holds a B.A. from the College of Wooster.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Pillion is best understood as an operating executive and platform-builder rather than a traditional angel investor; the “Angel Investors” and “Seed Round” stub data could not be verified from reliable sources.
  • Reliability Won’s current strategy is to build a global asset-reliability and industrial-services platform around training, certification, consulting, lubrication/oil analysis, specialized products and services, and potentially software.
  • Battery described the original Mobius investment as the foundation for “a new global platform offering asset-reliability solutions and industrial services.”
  • In the Fluid Life acquisition announcement, Reliability Won said it is seeking complementary acquisitions that strengthen knowledge and oil-analysis capabilities, while expanding into field services, specialized products, and asset-reliability software.
  • At Edgewater, Pillion’s stated focus was businesses with differentiated technologies, manufacturing capabilities, products, or services in industrial and reliability equipment, in-plant systems and services, and engineered components.
  • Edgewater’s broader lower-middle-market profile targets companies with under $100 million of revenue, under $25 million of EBITDA, positive-cash-flow add-ons of any size, and equity investments up to $50 million.

Notable Investments

  • Mobius Institute - Battery Ventures invested in Mobius in March 2024; Pillion joined as Group CEO to drive M&A, organic growth, and integration for the new asset-reliability platform.
  • Noria Corporation - Reliability Won acquired Noria in March 2025 as its second acquisition, adding lubrication and oil-analysis training, consulting, conferences, and software to the platform.
  • Fluid Life - Reliability Won acquired Fluid Life in January 2026, expanding into oil-condition monitoring through four labs across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Reliability Institute of Australia / Vibration Institute of Australia - Reliability Won disclosures describe this as an add-on that expanded vibration-analysis training in Australia.
  • Des-Case - Pillion served as CEO before Des-Case was acquired by The Timken Company in 2023; Timken said Des-Case’s 2023 revenue was expected to be around $40 million.
  • TRITEC Performance Solutions - Pillion served as CEO and was involved in TRITEC’s sale to Trelleborg Sealing Solutions; Edgewater lists TRITEC as a realized investment.
  • Race-Tec / Blue Diamond - TRITEC acquired Race-Tec and Blue Diamond in 2019 while Pillion was TRITEC CEO, expanding TRITEC’s global capabilities and footprint.
