Background

Mark Buffington is the co-founder and CEO of BIP Capital and Managing Partner of BIP Ventures, an Atlanta-based venture and private-markets firm he co-founded in 2006 in the wake of the dot-com bust. Over roughly two decades he has helped build BIP into one of the most active venture investors in the Southeast and one of the most active firms outside Silicon Valley. He has personally led more than 150 multi-sector, multi-stage investments, and under his leadership BIP Ventures reports ranking in the top quartile of VC firms by DPI and TVPI, with more than half of its investments returning 3x or better.

Before BIP, Buffington founded three startup companies, including Buckhead Investment Partners, LLC, a wealth-management firm and Registered Investment Advisor (the roots of what is now BIP Wealth) that has managed hundreds of millions in assets. He began his career in commercial banking with Citibank before moving into entrepreneurship and investing.

Buffington earned a B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology — where he was a varsity letterman in baseball — and an MBA from Tulane University's A.B. Freeman School of Business. He has served on numerous company and nonprofit boards, including NFHS Network, AchieveIt, Trella Health, PlayOn, UserIQ, ConnexPay, the Buckhead Coalition, and the Georgia Tech College of Computing.

In 2021 Buffington and BIP Capital joined forces with entrepreneur Paul Judge to launch Panoramic Ventures, a $300 million fund explicitly oriented around expanding access to capital across the Southeast, for diverse founders, and for "university-born" companies. More recently, he has led BIP's push into a proprietary "deep-data" AI platform and its Performance Engineering framework, and the firm has expanded into an evergreen private-equity BDC structure.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily in B2B software and tech-enabled services, across fintech, enterprise SaaS, healthcare IT, media/marketplaces, infrastructure/dev tools, and insurtech; generally avoids hardware, biotech, pharma, and CPG.
  • Seed checks of roughly $100K–$500K, with the ability to keep funding companies through later rounds (via BIP Ventures funds and Panoramic Ventures' $100K–$20M+ flexibility) so founders can stay with one capital partner from validation through scale.
  • Looks for strong teams, early traction, and a large addressable market — founders with potential to become category leaders.
  • The Panoramic thesis is built on three pillars: "geography, diversity, and university" — backing quality founders in underserved geographies where institutional capital is scarce, diverse founders, and university-born companies.
  • Emphasizes "disciplined investing, founder partnership, and long-term value creation," operationalized through BIP's Performance Engineering framework and, more recently, an internal AI platform used to source and assess deals.

Notable Investments

  • QA Symphony / Tricentis — software testing; scaled and became part of Tricentis (notable exit).
  • Ingenious Med — physician workflow/charge-capture software for healthcare.
  • Vendormate — healthcare vendor credentialing/compliance (acquired by GHX).
  • PlayOn (PlayOn! Sports) / NFHS Network — high-school sports streaming and ticketing; Buffington served on the board.
  • Trella Health — post-acute/healthcare data analytics; board seat.
  • ConnexPay — integrated payments/fintech; board seat.
  • Cypress.io — open-source developer testing framework.
  • Aspirion Health Resources — healthcare revenue-cycle management.
  • REACH Health — telemedicine software.
  • Tropical Smoothie Cafe — franchise food/beverage brand.
  • Huddle Tickets, Shareholder InSite, AchieveIt, UserIQ — additional portfolio companies (SaaS / sports / software).
