Mark Gambill

Mark M. Gambill is a longtime Virginia investment banker and the co-founder of Cary Street Partners, a Richmond-based wealth management, asset management, and investment banking firm he established in 2002 with Thomas H. Tullidge Jr. Gambill graduated summa cum laude from Hampden-Sydney College and went to work almost immediately for the Richmond brokerage Wheat First Butcher Singer, where he spent roughly 27 years (1972–1999).

At Wheat, Gambill rose through the capital markets side of the business. By the late 1980s he headed the firm's capital markets group — with responsibility spanning investment banking, public finance, taxable fixed income, municipal sales and trading, and equity sales, trading and research. He was named President of Wheat in 1996. After Wheat merged with First Union Corporation in January 1998, he served as President of Wheat First Union and was later named Head of Equity Capital Markets of the combined operation.

In 2002 Gambill co-founded Cary Street Partners, which has grown into a multi-office Southeastern advisory firm serving affluent families, entrepreneurs, and institutions, and which appears on industry rankings such as Barron's top RIA firms. He is described in current sources as the firm's founding partner and chairman (chairman emeritus), reflecting a transition from day-to-day leadership toward a founder/board role.

Beyond his own firm, Gambill has been an active public-company director. He joined the board of Triangle Capital Corporation (a Raleigh-based business development company, now part of Barings BDC) as an independent director in August 2009, serving on its Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee. He has also served as a director of NewMarket Corporation (NYSE: NEU), a specialty-chemicals holding company, sitting on its audit committee and serving as Lead Independent Director, and previously served on the board of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE: TRK) as chairman of its audit committee and a member of its compensation committee.
