Background
Mark Haller is a Managing Director and Founding Principal at Sumeru Equity Partners, a technology-focused growth equity firm that provides active growth capital to enterprise software companies. He joined the team in 2012, when the group operated as Silver Lake Sumeru before spinning out into the independent Sumeru Equity Partners, making him one of the firm's founding investment professionals. In January 2019 he was promoted to Principal, and he has since risen to Managing Director.
Before entering growth investing, Haller began his career in the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs & Co. At Sumeru he leads investments concentrated in human capital management, supply chain, and eCommerce software, and describes the most rewarding part of his role as "executing on ambitious scaling plans hand-in-hand with management to build clear software category leaders."
Haller earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign's Gies College of Business, where he completed a BS in Accounting, a BS in Finance, and a Master's in Accounting.
Across the firm, Sumeru has invested more than $3 billion across 50-plus platform and add-on investments spanning enterprise and vertical SaaS, data analytics, education technology, infrastructure software, and cybersecurity. Haller currently serves or has served as a Board Director for portfolio companies including beqom, Firstup, and 3Gtms, and previously for Azuga.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in growth-stage enterprise software companies with real revenue and a path to becoming scaled, category-leading businesses — a growth-equity strategy, not seed/angel investing.
- Personal focus areas: human capital management, supply chain, and eCommerce software.
- Emphasis on partnering operationally with management to execute "ambitious scaling plans" and "build clear software category leaders" rather than passive capital.
- Comfortable leading large, majority or significant minority strategic investments (e.g., the ~$300M beqom deal was led jointly by Haller and colleagues John Brennan and Jialin Zhang out of Sumeru Fund IV).
- Firm-wide thesis targets companies that "significantly impact technology transformation" as they grow "into scaled enterprise companies."
