Background
Mark Keeley is a long-tenured private equity investor based in ECI Partners' Manchester office, where he served as a Partner in the investment team with almost two decades of experience leading deals from initial investment through to successful exit. At ECI he was Head of the Industrials team and a member of the Business Services team, two of the areas in which the firm has historically been active.
He began his career in finance at Arthur Andersen before moving to Deloitte in Leeds, where he spent several years in the corporate finance advisory team and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ACA). He holds a degree in accounting and finance from Leeds University Business School. This accountancy-and-corporate-finance grounding is typical of ECI's deal partners and shaped his hands-on approach to working with portfolio company management teams.
ECI Partners itself is one of the UK's oldest private equity houses, with roots stretching back over four decades. The firm backs established, growing UK businesses — typically valued up to around £300m — taking either majority or minority positions and working alongside founders and management to accelerate growth ahead of an exit.
More recently Mark transitioned away from a full-time partner role to pursue a "plural" non-executive career, having particularly enjoyed his time on portfolio company boards. He continues to represent ECI as a Portfolio Adviser, sitting on the boards of BCN Group and Moneypenny.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through ECI's growth private equity model: backing profitable, established UK companies (not start-ups), valued up to roughly £300m, with equity cheques in the tens to low-hundreds of millions of pounds.
- Sector focus on Industrials (which he headed) and Business Services, alongside ECI's broader interest in technology-enabled, recurring-revenue businesses across Cloud & Digital, Data, Financial Services and HR/EdTech.
- Backs strong, ambitious management teams — ECI is known for partnering with leadership to scale a business, taking either majority or minority stakes (roughly a third of ECI deals are minority).
- Looks for businesses with proven growth, defensible market positions and clear value-creation runways (buy-and-build, internationalisation, operational improvement) that support a successful exit, where he built a track record of leading deals from entry to realisation.
