Mark Krcmaric

Mark C. Krcmaric is a 1980 graduate of the University of Notre Dame who went on to earn a joint MBA and law degree (JD/MBA) from Indiana University. Born October 3, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, he is an attorney by training and has also taught at Notre Dame's law school. He joined the University in 1998, initially serving as executive assistant to Scott C. Malpass, the University's Vice President for Finance and Chief Investment Officer, who built Notre Dame's endowment into one of the most respected in higher education.

In December 2002 / January 2003, Krcmaric was appointed Managing Director for finance and administration in the Investment Office, where he oversaw all administrative and financial operations — including investment accounting and analytics, securities gifts and charitable trusts, systems, and budget. In its announcement, the University quoted Malpass praising Krcmaric's "outstanding executive leadership skills," commitment to excellence, and appreciation for the University's mission, culture, and values.

By late 2007, coinciding with additional senior hires, his title was formalized to Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Investment Office, with a concentrated focus on the office's administrative and risk-management functions as Notre Dame's portfolio grew more sophisticated and global. He remained in this senior operating role, appearing in Notre Dame's annual administrative reports through at least 2019. As of 2026, the Investment Office is led by Vice President and Chief Investment Officer Timothy Dolezal (successor to Malpass, who retired in 2020); Krcmaric no longer appears on the current leadership roster, consistent with retirement or a change of role.

• Krcmaric's work is institutional endowment management, not angel/seed investing. His remit was the operational, financial, accounting, and risk-management backbone of a multi-billion-dollar university endowment.
• The Notre Dame endowment deploys capital largely as a limited partner in external managers across private equity, venture capital, real assets, public equities, and absolute-return strategies — a model long associated with Malpass's tenure.
• His personal focus areas within that machine were explicitly administrative and risk-management functions: investment accounting and analytics, securities gifts and charitable trusts, systems, and budget.
• Founders seeking direct seed capital would not typically raise from this office or from Krcmaric personally; the endowment backs *funds*, and those funds in turn back companies.
