Background
Mark A. Springer is a Managing Director and the Chief Accounting Officer of GTCR, a Chicago-based private equity firm founded in 1980. He joined GTCR in 2000 and spent much of his career building and running the firm's back-office finance function. He was promoted to Principal in 2013 and, on October 9, 2024, was elevated to Managing Director while continuing as Chief Accounting Officer. In that role he oversees the firm's increasingly complex finance, accounting, tax, and treasury activities and supports the affiliated funds managed by GTCR.
Before joining GTCR, Springer worked at the Chicago accounting firm Ostrow Reisin Berk & Abrams, Ltd. (ORBA), where he performed both audit and tax services. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and holds a BS from Indiana University, earning degrees in both accounting and finance.
GTCR is a leading private equity firm known for pioneering "The Leaders Strategy™" — identifying and partnering with proven management executives to build market-leading companies through acquisitions and organic growth. Within that organization, Springer sits on the operational/finance side of the house rather than the investment team; his work centers on the firm's own financial reporting, fund administration, and treasury operations rather than on making or managing portfolio deals.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Springer does not have a personal investment thesis — his mandate is internal finance and accounting, not deal-making. The items below describe GTCR at the firm level, for context only.
- GTCR invests via control buyouts and growth equity, typically in established companies (not startups), deploying large equity checks from multi-billion-dollar funds.
- Core sectors: Healthcare; Financial Services & Technology; Technology & Business Services.
- The firm's signature approach, "The Leaders Strategy™," is to back experienced management leaders in a domain and then acquire/build a platform company around them ("Leaders Strategy" partnerships often begin before a specific acquisition target is identified).
Notable Investments
- None attributable to Mark Springer personally. As Chief Accounting Officer he is not credited with sourcing or leading portfolio investments, so there is no personal deal track record to list. GTCR's platform (firm-level) investing spans healthcare, financial technology, and business/tech services; individual deal credit belongs to GTCR's investment principals and managing directors, not to the finance team.
