Background

Mark Tluszcz (born August 18, 1966) is an American businessman and venture capitalist who co-founded Mangrove Capital Partners in 2000 alongside Gerard Lopez and Hans-Jürgen Schmitz. He grew up in Africa and Egypt, studied in the United States, and has lived in Luxembourg for more than 30 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (with honours) from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, which later awarded him an honorary doctorate and invited him to give a commencement address.

Tluszcz spent the first decade of his career at Arthur Andersen, ultimately becoming a partner in its business consulting practice before running the firm's European venture capital fund — an early role that included the investment in Frederick Brewing Company, which listed on NASDAQ. He then left to build Mangrove into one of Europe's most recognized early-stage VC firms.

Mangrove is a Luxembourg-based fund that describes itself as "contrarian, bold and patient." Since 2000 it has made roughly 100–150 early-stage technology investments, primarily across Europe and Israel, and has grown to well over $750 million (reported by some sources at over $1 billion) in assets under management across several funds. Tluszcz is famous for the discipline of the model: the firm reviews on the order of 2,000 deals a year and invests in only about six, and has backed eight-plus companies that became unicorns.

Beyond investing, Tluszcz serves as Chairman of the Board of Wix.com (NASDAQ: WIX) and sits on the boards of companies including K Health, Red Points, and The Bank of London. He is an active public commentator — featured on Bloomberg TV and CNBC and quoted in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times — and was named by Forbes as one of the most respected technology dealmakers globally. He also authors a personal blog/brand, "Dare to Dream Beyond."

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage & size: Backs companies very early (pre-seed/seed through Series A), writing checks typically in the ~$100K–$5M range and acting as a long-term "anchor partner" rather than a passive check-writer.
  • Contrarian by design: Known for "investing in weird ideas" — he seeks category-defining, non-consensus startups and is comfortable being early and alone on a thesis.
  • Extreme selectivity: The firm looks at ~2,000 deals per year but invests in roughly six, betting big on a small number of high-conviction ideas.
  • Skeptic of hype cycles: Tluszcz has publicly warned about inflated "unicorn" valuations, fintech hype, and the sustainability of gig-economy business models — his April 2016 FT piece warning on fintech preceded LendingClub's CEO ouster and stock collapse.
  • User experience & focus: In sectors like digital/mobile health he has emphasized that obsessive focus on UX is the key differentiator.
  • Sector breadth: Concentrated in software-driven businesses — AI, enterprise SaaS, digital health, fintech, and consumer internet — across Europe and Israel.
