Mark Vainisi

Mark Vainisi is a healthcare and retail dealmaker with more than 25 years of experience developing corporate strategy, executing acquisitions, and building strategic partnerships. He spent the bulk of his career at Walgreens and Walgreens Boots Alliance, rising to Senior Vice President of Global Mergers & Acquisitions, where he built the company's M&A function and managed its multi-billion-dollar portfolio of pharmacy and healthcare investments. Earlier in his career he was Vice President of Mergers & Acquisitions at Walgreen Co. (roughly 2005–2015), and before Walgreens he worked at the Tribune Company and at the law firm Sidley Austin.

At WBA, Vainisi led some of the largest and most complex transactions in the company's history: the ~$1.1 billion acquisition of Duane Reade (2011), the 2012 investment in Alliance Boots and the subsequent 2014 merger (where he served as head of integration), the strategic partnership with AmerisourceBergen (2013), the acquisition of select Rite Aid stores in 2017 for more than $4 billion, and the ~$6.5 billion sale of Alliance Healthcare in 2021. He also assembled a WBA healthcare portfolio worth more than $15 billion through investments in VillageMD, Shields Health Solutions, CareCentrix and Option Care Health.

Alongside the large-cap M&A work, Vainisi was closely associated with Well Ventures, Walgreens' quieter early-stage corporate venture vehicle, which took minority stakes in a dozen-plus health, beauty and technology startups. This is the vehicle behind the "angel / seed-stage" investing profile.

In March 2022 he moved to VillageMD (a company WBA had heavily backed) as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy, later described as Chief Strategy & Growth Officer, and has served on the boards of VillageMD, Option Care Health, Shields Health Solutions, and iA (pharmacy automation). He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
