Background

Marko Mitrovic is a Partner at Accession Capital Partners (ACP), the Vienna-based investment firm that began life in 2000 as "Mezzanine Management" — a pioneer of private debt in Central Europe — and has since evolved into a "one-stop-shop for growth capital to mid-market businesses." He joined ACP in 2019 and is responsible for the firm's investments in the Western Balkans and Bulgaria. ACP has invested over €1.3 billion across five funds; its latest vehicle (AMC V / Fund V) closed at roughly €336 million.

Before ACP, Marko spent his career in restructurings and special situations, working across most countries of Central and Southeast Europe as well as in the United States — most recently at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). He has also served as CEO and CFO of companies with €50–200 million in revenues, and spent more than ten years affiliated with Reconstruction Capital, a London Stock Exchange-listed fund focused on the CEE region.

Marko is the founder, a director, and an investment committee member of EMSA Capital, a Vienna-based private equity firm specializing in turnarounds and special situations across Central and Eastern Europe (the firm traces its activity to 1992 and manages a CEE Special Situations Fund of over €93 million). He describes roughly 20 years of experience in special-situations private equity, restructuring, and interim/investment management across the US and CEE.

A graduate of City University, Marko has authored a book on restructuring, has had work featured in industry journals including the Norton Annual Review of International Insolvency, and is a member of the International Insolvency Institute (III).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage & instrument: Growth capital and private debt/mezzanine for established mid-market companies, plus buyouts, carve-outs, and special situations — explicitly not early-stage/seed.
  • Check size: ~€10m–€35m equity/debt tickets per deal; portfolio target of ~14–16 investments per fund.
  • Target profile: "Established, market-leading businesses" with ~€5m–€20m EBITDA, including founder-led companies "reaching pivotal transition points" (succession, professionalization, regional expansion).
  • Geography: CEE / Southeast Europe, with Marko personally owning the Western Balkans and Bulgaria; broader firm activity in Poland, Croatia, Bulgaria and beyond.
  • Special situations angle: Marko's edge is operational turnaround and restructuring — via EMSA Capital he backs "performing companies and those experiencing a greater degree of challenges," taking an active role alongside management.
  • Firm thesis (per ACP partner Chris Buckle): "One of the key challenges investors face in CEE isn't risk — it's a lack of familiarity"; the firm argues limited competition from global funds yields "better entry valuations, stronger deal positions, and a more attractive risk-return profile."

Notable Investments

  • LINK Group (vocational education arm), Serbia (Nov 2023) — ACP, alongside Bulgaria's Invenio Partners, acquired LINK Group's vocational education division to build a Southeast Europe IT-and-education champion; a deal aligned with Marko's Western Balkans mandate.
  • Fomtech (carve-out) — ACP supported the carve-out of Fomtech (announced via ACP's news page).
  • EMSA Capital / CEE Special Situations Fund — as founder/IC member, Marko invests the ~€93m fund into turnaround and performance-improvement situations across CEE (manufacturing, FMCG).
  • *(ACP as a firm reports five new investments and seven exits since January 2024, with DPI over 100% in its predecessor fund; specific company names beyond the above were not individually confirmed in sources.)*
